Obituary of James Henry CASSIDY

January 26, 1926 – Calgary, Alberta September 3, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta It is with profound sadness that the family of Deak Cassidy announce his passing on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at the age of 91 years. Deak worked at Hudson’s Bay O&G, Husky Oil and Canadian Reserve O&G. He loved sports, having played hockey for the Arena Dukes, football, baseball, curling and golf. He was the 1984 Sportsman of the Year, and enjoyed his association with the Calgary Booster Club, Calgary Old Time Hockey Players, Father Whelihan Scholarship Committee, U of C Hockey Dinosaurs, Camp Cadicasu, Canadian Wheelchair Games, Alberta Track and Field, Booster Club hockey school, Banff hockey school, the Calgary Stampeder Senior Hockey Team, and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame Committee. His other sports involvements included junior, intermediate and oil league hockey refereeing, volunteering at the Olympics, the World Police/Fire games, track and field events, and golf tournaments. These involvements created many good, long-term friendships. At one point, after accompanying Grampa to a game, his grandson remarked: “Grampa knows everybody.” Deak is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margie; son Barrie (Arlene); daughter Susan (Dale) Archibald; four grandchildren, Ryan (Jessica) Cassidy, Thomas (Kathryn) Cassidy, Diane Cassidy (Jack) and Kristy Archibald; great-grandson Logan Cassidy. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved nothing more than having his family gathered together. Deak was predeceased by his father and mother, George and Mary Cassidy; brothers, George, Patrick and Joseph; sisters, Mae, Noreen and Dorothy. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church (2424 – 24th Avenue N.W.) on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the Church.
