Obituary of Rosemaire Francis PINKMAN

January 17, 1931 – Melfort, Saskatchewan September 2, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta Rosemaire passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at the age of 86 years. Rosemaire Francis Pinkman (nee O’Flanagan) was born in Lady Minto Hospital in Melfort, SK on January 17, 1931. She grew up on the family farm attending Dover rural school to grade eleven. She completed her high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Regina, and received an Honors B.A. and a B.Ed. degree from the U of S, and a B.Sc. in Journalism from Marquette U in Milwaukee. She taught in high schools in SK (Porcupine Plain, Humboldt, Wilkie) and in Taber and Camp Wainwright, AB. She taught abroad in Shillong, India; Zomba, Malawi; Kumasi, Ghana; and Ibadan, Nigeria. She was married to Francis (Pinkman) Maguire for 47 years. They began their married life in Ibadan and lived a short while in Dublin before returning to Canada. They spent 4 years in Yellowknife with their family of 4, finally settling in Calgary. Rosemaire retired from teaching at Bow Valley College and the U of C in 2001 at the age of 70. During several visits to Ireland (her father’s homeland) she enjoyed memorable holidays with her Irish relatives. She had great respect and fond affection for the English language – speaking, reading, writing and teaching it. She was an eclectic and avid reader – her favourite bookmark reads, “People say life’s the thing, but I prefer reading.” In later years she wrote her memoirs. They reveal her carefree childhood on the farm she loved; her enthusiasm for learning and teaching; her adventurous spirit; her lifelong interest in current affairs – education, the Church, the media, politics and sports. She liked to play cards; do word and jigsaw puzzles; cheer on the Blue Jays and the Green Riders; watch curling and international hockey; and she loved the movies. Rosemaire leaves to mourn her children: Sean, Patrick, Michael (Wendy Chernecki), Kathleen (Ryan Bortolin); six grandchildren, Brendan, Maeve, Nolan Maguire, Elia, Anthony and Moira Bortolin; sister-in-law Enid O’Flanagan, brother-in-law Robert Ferris, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ann and Karl Pinkman, sister-in-law Sister Kathryn Pinkman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosemaire was predeceased by her husband Frank; sisters, Nora Ferris and Margaret (Sister Mary Paula) O’Flanagan; brother Red (Tom) O’Flanagan; nephew Patrick O’Flanagan; niece Pat O’Flanagan; brother-in-law Father John; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Eileen and Peter Phillipson. Rosemaire saw many exotic landscapes in her travels, but her favourite scene was always of the prairie farmlands. Driving homeward from the mountains, she was thrilled to see the fields appear – “Thank God, there’s the horizon.” As she embarks on this remarkable journey, may the horizon be there for her.
