Obituary of Beryl Woodward

Beryl Joyce Woodward (nee Hyde) passed away peacefully in her sleep early Thursday morning, June 15 at the Foothills Hospital. Beryl was born in Calgary and raised in DeWinton. She attended Davisburg School and later boarded in Calgary to attend high school at Connaught and Crescent Heights, where she met her husband George. With the encouragement of her mother and older sister Ethyl, Beryl pursued a career in education, attending Calgary Normal School, The University of Alberta, the University of British Columbia, earning her Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary in 1966. Beryl taught with the Calgary Board of Education between 1951 and 1989, serving as a teacher at King Edward, Colonel Sanders, and University Elementary. She also served as the principal of Dr. E.W. Coffin, Roland Michener, Sunnyside and Pineridge Elementary Schools. In 1982 she was invited to start Oakley Centre, Calgary’s first school for gifted and talented children. Beryl also served with the Board’s central administrative units with the Language Skills consultation team and the Learning Skills Process team. Since retirement, Beryl enjoyed traveling, gardening and keeping in touch with her many dear friends and family. Beryl will be greatly missed by her two sons, Gerry (Janice), Bill (Susan); four grandchildren, Angie, Del, Robert and Kristine; her brother Don Hyde, sister, Maxine McKenzie as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband George Woodward, brothers Ross and Bruce and sister Ethyl. A Celebration of Beryl’s Life will be held St. Giles Presbyterian Church (1102 – 23rd Avenue N.W.) on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. David Vincent, Presider. The family would like to extend its sincerest appreciation to Dr. I. Belenkie and the staff of the Foothills Cardiac Function Clinic, the Pacemaker Clinic and the staff of Unit 82 at the Foothills Hospital for their many years of outstanding care, attention and kindness.
