Obituary of Hazel HUTCHISON

January 3, 1920 – Glastonbury, Somerset, England August 12, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta Hazel Hutchison of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the age of 97 years. Hazel was born in England while her parents – Mabel and Frank Wall, were visiting her grandmother. She came to North America by ship, one year later. Mabel’s maiden name was Faren Maxwell. After Frank passed away, Mabel remarried and her husband dropped Hazel and her sister Mildred off at an orphanage. They both turned into the best mothers a person could have. An uncle used to drive them around Alberta and BC. Hazel met Jack Hutchison in Clareshome and then they moved to Nanton, AB. They moved to Calgary in 1949. She liked curling and won a few trophies. She also enjoyed golfing with her friends, the Rosmunds. After divorcing, she worked at Heritage Park giving tours on the train cars. One car was built for the Queen to travel across Canada, another was to carry coal miners to the mines in Canmore. Her sister’s husband Hank Hall rode the car to work every day and his father built it. She then worked for friends at a gift shop. Later, she worked at the Pickadilly Place gift shop, at the Calgary Inn and became manager. She occasionally came home with stories of the famous actors, politicians and musicians that she met there. She once got Alex into a Santana concert. She liked to cruise around in her gold 1965 Cadilac convertable that her son John, found her. She met Charles Lowe at the gift shop and years later they married and moved to Portland, Oregon until Charles passed away ten years later. Hazel became close to her stepdaughter Jessica and her son Gianni. Charles knew that Hazel loved Cadilacs and bought her a 1989 Broughm d’Elegance. Hazel then moved in with her son Alex in Calgary in 1999. She loved to garden and when she saw Alex’s empty flower beds, she was happy to fill them up. Her son John passed away around two year later in 2001. Hazel liked to visit her friend Marge in Milbury, California every year until she got too old to travel. When her sister Mildred was not well, Hazel had Alex drive her out to Burnaby, BC four times a year to take care of her. This lasted for six years until Mildred passed away. They used to laugh like the little girls they used to be. Hazel lived at Alex’s for seventeen years until she moved into the Father Lacombe Providence Care Center in April, 2016. She was constantly cruising around the care center looking for Alex. She stood out, as she liked to dress fashionably, all in black with a black cap. She could have been on stage at a jazz club. I would like to thank the staff at the Father Lacombe Providence Care Center as they couldn’t have been more helpful and more caring. As per Hazel’s wishes a private family gathering will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Hazel Hutchison, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB Telephone: 403-256-9575.
