Obituary of Genevieve SOLTYS

SOLTYS, Genevieve November 10, 1927 – Krakow, Poland June 3, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta Genevieve Soltys, of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at the age of 87 years. Genevieve was raised near Krakow, Poland until she was 15. During the war, she was taken into forced labour to Germany where she worked in an airplane factory salvaging parts from damaged aircraft, later being taken to the Western Front to dig trenches against advancing allied troops. She was liberated by the allies at the end of the war and ended up in a Displaced Persons camp where she met and married her husband Stefan, a Polish Prisoner Of War. She and Stefan immigrated to Canada in 1949, eventually settling in Southern Ontario. They raised their children then eventually, following their children out west, settling in Calgary. Genevieve loved to sew and made most of her own clothes, she also enjoyed making her “world famous” plum jam, cooking and baking, sharing her homemade buns with friends and ensuring her children were always well stocked with pierogis and cabbage rolls. Genevieve enjoyed listening to Luciano Pavarotti and the Three Tenors, and never missed watching Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights. Genevieve is survived by her son Ted (Kathleen) Soltys and daughter Elizabeth (Rod) Elder, two grandchildren, Stephen and Edward Soltys, a niece Helen Soltys, a nephew Artur (Iwona) Wytrwal and their son Sebastian. She was predeceased by her husband Stefan Soltys in 1998. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Drive NW) on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
