Obituary of James Sidney ADAMSON

January 3, 1922 – Melita, MB December 29, 2014 – Calgary, AB Jim Adamson beloved husband of Marina of Calgary, passed away in the presence of his loving family on December 29, 2014 at the age of 92 years. On January 3, 1922, a baby boy was born to parents John and Ida Adamson: Jim, the New Year’s baby of Melita, Manitoba. He joined brothers Mac and Charlie, and they would later welcome their youngest brother Doug. As the son of a miller, Jim moved with his family across western Canada during his childhood, making their way to Calgary in 1936. After the passing of his father John in 1937, Jim and his brothers worked to support their family. In 1939, he moved temporarily to Thunder Bay to build Hawker Hurricane fighters for the airforce. After returning to Calgary in 1940, he began working as an inspector of artillery gun sights at the Ogden Shops and also bought his first house with his mother Ida at the age of 19. In 1945, Jim started his first company – Central Machine. After selling Central Machine he started Cascade Machine Company Ltd., which he ran successfully until semi-retiring in 1966. In 1957, Jim married the love of his life, Marina, the sister of his friends Hazel, Lorne, Frank and Earl. They welcomed three daughters into their family: Lorna, Shirley, and Brenda. In his semi-retirement, Jim continued with his real estate and prospecting. It began with a cabin on the far side of the Mabel Lake, where the family would spend their summers. He purchased the Mabel Lake resort and subsequently developed the Mabel Ridge Estates subdivision. Jim and Marina built a new cabin in the subdivision in the 70s, where the family continues to stay and enjoy the lake. Jim also acquired a property near Cochrane, where the family spent time pursuing activities of all sorts: growing crops of potatoes and hay (despite hay fever), cross country skiing, hiking through the woods, playing in the treehouse, and taking in the mountain views. Jim had a passion for prospecting and explored all over BC with his friends and family. His prospecting stories were full of adventure – and sometimes dynamite. Jim was a man of many talents including poetry, writing, prospecting, geology, machining, engineering, inventing, business, astronomy, history, and the list goes on. Jim was a true life-long learner. Though a very successful man, Jim was always willing to lend a hand and offer advice. He will be remembered most as a loving husband and father first. His daughters remember him driving them and their friends to all their events and activities, which he carried on with his grandchildren. He taught his grandchildren how to work with wood and metal, helping them construct their school projects, build go karts and a pontoon bike, and fix up their cars. Jim is survived by his wife Marina, daughters Lorna (Bill), Shirley (Rob), and Brenda (Dave), and brother Doug. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren James (Loni), Zach (Lindsey), Stuart (Germaeline), Ben (Vera), Fietje (Mark), Garrick (Nataliya), and Rebecca (Andrew), his great grandchildren Liam, Rosamarina, Alberta, Nolan, Eleadora, Costin, and Susanna, his many nieces and nephews, and of course his loving dogs. Jim was predeceased by his parents Ida and John, brothers Mac and Charlie, and son-in-law Stuart.
