Obituary of Maria PIRES (nee Vieira)

November 2, 1935 – Sao Miguel, Portugal          

October 23, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta   

Maria Pires of Calgary passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at the age of 83 years.

Maria was born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal on November 2, 1935. At the age of 5 Maria moved to Lisbon, Portugal, where she later met and then married her soulmate Augusto.

The family immigrated to Canada and made Calgary their home. Maria worked at the Holy Cross OR Department for 25 years before she retired.

Maria was an amazing cook, loved sewing, cooking, drawing and doing word puzzles, but most of all she loved looking after her grandchildren.

Maria is survived by her daughter Margaret and son-in-law Glenn Foster; daughter-in-law Elaine Pires; and four grandchildren, Kelcey and Sean Foster, and Curtis and Chad Pires; as well as two nephews in Portugal, John and Pedro, and a sister-in-law Adelaide, one niece Carmina; and two nephews, Walter and Arnold in California. Maria is predeceased by her husband Augusto; son Antonio Pires ; her parents; her brother; and her in-laws.

Maria was very  loved and will be deeply missed. Margaret, Glenn and family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the friends and staff at SkyPointe Community for their support and care over the past year.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church (10 Prestwick Drive S.E., Calgary AB) on Friday, November 1, 2019 at 12:00 p.m.  Rev. Andrew Maruszczak SDS presiding.
