Archibald “Archie” GOODBUN

Obituary of Archibald “Archie” Lewis GOODBUN

March 29, 1931 – Dropmore, Manitoba
November 4, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Archibald “Archie” Lewis Goodbun of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 4, 2019 at the age of 88 years.

Archie was born in Dropmore, Manitoba, to Archibald and Cora Goodbun. After completing high school in Russell, Manitoba, Archie obtained his teaching certificate and began his career in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Manitoba. He would later move to Alberta where he would continue to teach in rural classrooms. He obtained his teaching degree through the University of Alberta by taking summer sessions and settled in Red Deer in 1964 where he taught at the elementary, junior, and high school levels until his retirement in 1986.

In 1963 Archie married Joan Vivian Robert in Calgary and after moving to Red Deer, they soon welcomed their cherished daughters, Jane and Nancy. Years raising children were highlighted with living east of Red Deer in the Balmoral subdivision on an acreage which provided the space to have horses and share in both 4H and Pony Club activities in the area. Archie and Joan were members of St. Luke’s and St. Leonard’s Anglican Churches until they relocated to Calgary in their later years to be closer to family.

Archie was an avid member of the Elks Club (#85) and after retirement was involved with the Central Alberta Retired Teachers Association (CARTA).

Archie had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed a good political discussion. He loved to play his guitar and old time country music was his favourite. He was a man of integrity and values. A handshake was golden in his books. He enjoyed reading and watching his favourite television shows and sports teams including the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Maple Leafs. Retirement years with Joan included travel to see grandchildren and trips to both England and Costa Rica.

Archie took great pride in his family and will be dearly missed by his daughters, Jane Forgay and Nancy (Brian) Hooge as well as Bill Forgay, son-in-law. He adored his grandchildren who affectionately called him “Papa”. He will be lovingly remembered by Allison (Charles) Forgay-Gray, Kimberly Forgay, Emily Hooge and Matt Hooge. He was further blessed in 2018 with a great-grandson, Coltan Gray. Archie is also survived by his sisters, Betty MacKinnon of Calgary and Alice (Harry) Drever of Olds, Alberta, and their families. Archie was predeceased only a short time ago in April, 2019, by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Joan. May they rest in eternal peace, together again.

A private family Graveside Service will be held at the Alto-Reste Cemetery (26575 AB-11, Red Deer County, AB T4E 1B7), at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

Archie’s family is grateful to the many people who cared for him in these last few years. Heartfelt thanks goes out to the staff at the Lodge at Valley Ridge, Foothills Medical Centre’s Unit 71, Elder Care of Calgary (Dimitri), and the compassionate care team at the George Boyack Care Center.

A tree will be planted in living memory of Archie Goodbun. McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3,   Telephone: 403-241-0044.
