Norman GODDARD

Obituary of Norman GODDARD

October 6, 1927 – St. Michael, Barbados
November 23, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Norman Lamonte Goddard took his first breath on October 6, 1927 in Black Rock, St. Michael, Barbados and his last on Saturday, November 23, 2019 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada at the age of 92 years.

After attending St. Stephen’s and Combermere Schools, Norman attended the training school of Cable & Wireless for 9 months starting in September 1944. From there he qualified as a dual wireless operator. In the early 1960’s, Norman’s shift duty days as a wireless operator ended when he joined the administration team of the company. He retired from Cable & Wireless in September 1985.

On February 7, 1948, Norman married the love of his life, Leila (Lee) Carter. Together they raised 4 children in Barbados.

Norman enjoyed sports, particularly cricket and on any given Saturday, could be seen umpiring on one of the numerous cricket pitches in Barbados. After he and Leila immigrated to Canada in 1986, he continued this Saturday activity and umpired at Riley Park in Calgary.

Although Norman never played an instrument besides the mouth organ, he enjoyed a wide range of music. When his son Mark, and nephew Andy, along with some friends decided to form a band “The Bachelors” in Barbados, Norman was happy to help as manager and van driver.

Norman was a loving husband and father whose life revolved around his family and close friends. What you saw is what you got with Norman. And he loved a good joke.

Norman is lovingly remembered by his wife of 71 years, Leila (Lee), their children: Stephen Goddard (Annamarie); Cheryl Nelson (John); C. Mark Goddard (Jeannine); and Sandra Daniels (Dave), as well as many Grands, Great-grands, brother Michael Goddard, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Norman was the oldest of 5 children and was predeceased by 3 of his siblings, Marjorie Frank, Richard Goddard and Greta White.
