Obituary of Robert (Bob) Finlay HUGHES

June 18, 1928 – Didsbury, Alberta
January 13, 2020 – Cochrane, Alberta

Bob passed away quietly in his sleep at the age of 91 in Cochrane, AB, on Monday, January 13, 2020, with his loving wife of 66 years, Marjorie, at his side.

Bob was born June 18, 1928, in Didsbury, AB and grew up on the Hughes Family farm west of Didsbury, riding his favourite pony, Flash, to the one-room local school. As an adult, Bob lived in Calgary where he married and raised his family, and spent retirement years in Canmore, AB. He pursued the electrical training program at SAIT and later achieved his journeyman electrician designation.  Bob later returned to school at the University of Alberta earning a Bachelor of Education degree. Bob's career evolved from electrician to teacher of electricity to vocational Department Head, primarily at Forest Lawn High School in Calgary.

We remember Bob for his dedication to family, love of life and calm steady presence. Dad always allowed his boys to work alongside him no matter what the task. His quiet involvement, consistency in a task and his knack for a good farm story or subtle one-liners are fondly remembered. He was blessed with a beautiful baritone voice singing with choirs at the Hillhurst United Church in Calgary, Ralph Connor Memorial United Church in Canmore, and with Calgary Philharmonic Chorus. His lifelong interest was in Barbershop, singing with “Calgary Stampede City Chorus” and quartet - G.O.L.D. “Gentlemen of Lyrical Distinction”.

Bob and Marj enjoyed travels to Europe, Australia, Haida Gwaii, Norway, and bicycle trips in Holland and England.

Family was very important to Bob, summer camping and winter ski holidays that included memorable and fun times with his beloved three grandchildren. He treasured time with friends golfing, skiing and socializing over Bridge games, as well as gatherings with extended family at many celebrations each year.

Bob is survived by his wife Marjorie, his three sons, Doug, Fred and Scott (Susan Hughes); and grandchildren Jenni, Michaela, and Connor Hughes; as well as his sister Phyllis Bricker and her family Gordon, Ross (Rose) and their children, Alexa, Kyle and Joan.
