Obituary of Choon Swee THENG

October 27, 1939 – Kuching, Malaysia

January 14, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Choon Swee Theng, beloved husband of Rosalind Theng of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at the age of 80 years.

Choon was born in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia on October 27, 1939. Choon graduated from the University of Newcastle in Australia with an Electrical Engineering Degree in 1969. He then married Rosalind on July 8, 1972 in Kuching, Malaysia. He immigrated to Canada with Rosalind and Joyce on January 10, 1975. Choon enjoyed spending time and travelling with his family. He also enjoyed being active in the outdoors by biking, hiking, cross country skiing, golfing, snow shoeing, tai-chi and long walks with good friends. Choon’s most memorable vacation was visiting the Grand Canyon where his family hiked the Bright Angel Trail. His efforts to keep an eye on his daughters, while concerned with leaving Rosalind behind, resulted in him not being able to walk the next day. For some reason this remained his most memorable vacation. Choon accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of his family and grandchildren. He will be most remembered for his willingness to take on challenges, commitment to his family, and his dry humor which those who got to know him were familiar with.

Besides his loving wife, Choon is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Raymond Fung of Calgary, AB, Julie Theng and Roger Lennartsson of Wetaskiwin, AB; four grandchildren, Brendan and Erin Fung of Calgary, AB, Mattias Lennartsson and Magnus Lennartsson of Wetaskiwin, AB. Choon is also survived by his sister, Then Yin Lian of Kuching, Malaysia; two brothers, Then Yeng Swee and Then Chong Swee of Kuching, Malaysia and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Choon was predeceased by his parents, Then Kiat and Chen Tet Kee; his oldest brother, Then Yan, his brother, Then Yin Swee and his eldest sister, Then Phek Lian.
