Obituary of Edna HORNETT (nee Hartl)

Edna Hornett (nee Hartl) of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at the age of 96 years. She was born at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 1923, to Mary (nee Dittrich) and Philip Hartl at the Hartl homestead on 15-27-18-W2, near Quinton Saskatchewan.  She was delivered by a midwife, Mrs. John Nagy.

Edna’s most memorable employment was with the National Research Council in Ottawa, Ontario, doing high security work during the Korean War.  After marrying Jim Hornett in 1951 she stayed home to raise their six children.  Edna enjoyed hiking and skiing in the Rocky Mountains with the Skrastins Outdoor Club and had travelled to over fifty countries in Europe, Asia and Africa with Jim.

Edna was predeceased by Jim, her husband of sixty-five years, in 2017.  She is survived by their six children of whom she was very proud,  James (Ruth) Hornett, Mary (Guy) Hornett-Twigg, Mark (Shelley) Hornett, Kathy Murphy, Teresa (Peter) Hornett, and Jason Hornett; grandchildren, Adrian, Margaux, Michael, James, Liam, Nicholas, Ruby and Margaret; and one great-grandchild, Ari.  Edna is also survived by two sisters, Elsie Smith and Bert Kenny. She was predeceased by her brothers, Albert and Rudy. 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (Corner of Northmount Drive & Northland Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 24, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.   Reception to follow at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

The family would like to thank Carina Leveque and the staff of Carewest Colonel Belcher for their care of both Edna and Jim in their last years.
