Condolences
Uncle Dick was a kind and and gentle man. I always appreciated the attention he and Aunty Fern gave me when I visited the family home in Victoria.
We have so many fond memories of Dick and Fern. They joined us for memorable and wonderful family dinners at Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving in my Mum and Dad;s later years. We had a "golf" game that we used to play on the living room carpet and Dick always enjoyed playing and often won! I will always remember Dick's interesting stories about the building of the Icefields Highway between Jasper and Banff. I remember him talking about Miette hot springs and may have worked somewhere near there.
He also had fascinating stories and pictures of the building of the Lion's Gate Bridge in Vancouver. Dick was a very kind, intelligent and interesting friend of our family and we will all remember him fondly.

I first met Dick as a teenager. I arrived from Ottawa and my mom, Fern’s cousin, arranged for me to stay with Fern and Dick. The visit was wonderful, with Ann showing me the ocean and Fern and Dick taking me on long trips up island, over to Whistler, and Vancouver.
In my 30’s my husband and I moved to Victoria. John stayed with Fern and Dick while he found a house and job, and then I arrived with our baby son, to reconnect with them.
Years passed, and Fern and Dick’s became the surrogate grandparents and family home. There were lots of visits from Ann and Roy and their families, and wonderful memories of Evelyn Place.
Once Fern was settled in Mount St. Mary’s and Dick was across the street in Rose Manor, life took on a nice pattern of visits and helping them. Dick was a wonderful caregiver to Fern, loving, attentive, consistent. He was with her every day and took wonderful care of her.
And Ann and Roy and family would arrive every December for our family Christmas. Ann and Roy would also always arrive within hours of my call that there was a medical situation and I needed help.
Dick he was so organized with me, calling when he needed me, always happy to have me drop in for a visit. I finally got to know a very intelligent man, with wonderful stories of his life.
Dick led a long and good life, loved Fern and his family very much, and he will be missed.
When dad was in the Rockyview I mentioned to him that his walking should be as good as before otherwise they might not take him back to the seniors' place he was in. The next day when I talked to Jim he said "I don't know what got into Dick. We went for a walk and he walked twice as fast as before and five times as far."
