Obituary of Mark David ROBERTON

December 4, 1956 –Winnipeg, Manitoba March 11, 2018 – Okotoks, Alberta Mark Roberton gently passed from the loving arms of his family, Linda, Christine and Jason, to the arms of God, in the early hours of Sunday, March 11, 2018 at the age of 61 years. Mark was diagnosed with Small Cell Lung Cancer on May 2, 2017. Mark showed incredible fight throughout treatment and was continually encouraged by his amazing supportive friends and family. Mark married his wife Linda (nee Hardy) on June 21, 1980. They had two children, Scott and Christine. Mark was a devoted, active father who coached soccer, sold Girl Guide cookies and loved to help with science projects. Mark loved family above everything and he cherished every day that he had his family at his side, whether it be family vacations, the Stampeder games or hanging out watching his beloved sports on the television. Mark loved being a “PupPup” to his grandson Tyson, he enjoyed taking him on adventure walks down the beach, exploring garage sales and shooting water guns at each other in the pool. Mark was born in Winnipeg, MB on December 4, 1956. At a very young age he could be seen selling garden seeds and The Star Weekly up and down his street. He grew up playing football for the E.K. Lions, curling at Rossmere Golf and Curlng Club and spent his summers selling newspapers and water skiing at the family cottage at Twin Beaches. He attended Neil Campbell Elementary School, John Henderson Junior High and Miles Macdonell High School. In 1979, Mark graduated from the University of Winnipeg and began work in the Insurance Industry at Canadian Indemnity. In 1984, Mark took a job in Thunder Bay, he and his wife then moved to Calgary in 1985 where he became the Auto Manager at Wawanesa Insurance. With his eye set on the evolution of this new thing called Risk Management, Mark joined Husky Energy and spent ten years there learning and growing this industry. Finally retiring on November 30, 2014, after seventeen years as Director of Risk Management and Insurance for Nexen Energy, Mark took it easy and moved to London U.K with his wife Linda to pursue his dream of starting up Palm Global with some good friends and colleagues. Mark was active in his industry, teaching in the insurance programs at Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary, holding positions on various boards and committees. Mark was an accomplished presenter and spoke at conferences, training and workshops around the world. Mark was an avid sports lover and collector of anything and most things. He spent many hours painting in his studio at his happy place, his lakehouse in Ponemah, MB. Mark was a lover of traditions; he served noodles on Good Friday and baked glorious treats each Christmas. Mark was a man of strong faith. He served on several committees at our first church in Winnipeg and upon moving to Calgary we joined Peace Luther Church, where Mark held many roles: Youth leader, Bible Camp Teacher, Adult Sunday School Leader, Church Elder and Chairman on the Congregation. Mark’s deep and abiding faith in Christ, and his devotion as a servant of God, his church and his community was evident to all. Mark is survived by his loving wife, Linda; his daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Jason Rachar; grandson, Tyson Rachar. Mark will be missed many, including his two brothers and sister-in-law, Rob and Valerie and James; sisters-in-law, Pat (Tim) and Lori (Dean); brothers-in-law, Jamie (Mona) and Robert (Cheryl); as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and a multitude of colleagues and friends around the world. He will be sadly missed by his furry family, Hurley, Louis, Lola, Charlos and Todd. Mark was predeceased by his Parents, Mack and Dorin Roberton; his beloved son, Scott Roberton (2017); and Murphy his ever-faithful dog. A Wake will be held at the Royal Duke Pub in Okotoks at 6:00 p.m. to give us an opportunity to hear all of your wonderful stories about Mark.
