Obituary of C. Spencer, Colonel MBE, QHDS

February 3, 1914 – Calgary, AB February 19, 2018 – Calgary, AB Dr. C. Spencer Lea of Calgary passed away peacefully on February 19, 2018 at the age of 104 at The Colonel Belcher Hospital in Calgary. Born in Calgary on February 3, 1914, Dr. Lea was a well known and respected dentist who continued his practice in Calgary until his retirement in 1986 at the age of 72. During WW II, he served with the Canadian Dental Corps, 1941-1945, assigned to the 5th Canadian Armoured Division. His final overseas appointment was that of Commanding Officer of No. 2 Company, Technical Training Centre in Utrecht, Holland. After the war, he was named ADDS (Assistant Director Dental Services) Western Command. In the years following, he served on various boards and committees in Calgary, including being elected president of the Calgary Dental Assoc. in 1948. In 1955, he was elected president of the Western Canada Dental Society and in 1957 was awarded QHDS (Queens Honorary Dental Surgeon) His significant pass times included sailing with the Calgary Yacht Club, serving one term as Commodore and later became an Honorary Life Member in 1962. He curled for many years with the Glencoe Club, and worked with horses, alongside his daughter through the ALHA (Alberta Light Horse Assoc.) In 1974, he was named first Honorary Course Designer of Spruce Meadows and was later named Horseman of the Year by the ALHA. In later years, he enjoyed golfing and family visits. At the age of 93, he penned his “memoirs,” recollections of his life for which his family will be forever grateful. Spencer is survived by one son, Brent and wife Cecilia of Radium Hot Springs, BC; four grandchildren, Heather Lea, Vanessa Lea, Gregory Stone and Jacqueline Stone; and two great-grandchildren, Grace Stone and Spencer Stone. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty-seven years “Toni” in 2008 and his daughter Mary Elizabeth Stone in 2010. A Celebration of Spencer’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home.
