Gary McINNIS

Obituary of Gary McINNIS

1951 – 2020

With irreparably broken hearts, we are utterly devastated to announce the premature passing of our beloved husband and father, Gary McInnis. On September 2, 2020, Gary passed at the Foothills Hospital with his wife and daughter tightly holding him.

Gary was born in Ontario, but affectionately called both Calgary and Edmonton home. He studied engineering at the University of Alberta before enjoying a successful career in oil and gas. He passionately sustained a tireless work ethic, but found time to playfully rib colleagues who were Flames fans whenever the Oilers had a lead. Above everything else, Gary cherished his family. He married his childhood sweetheart and best friend Jeanne, who was always by his side. After the arrival of daughter, Aubrey, the family became an impenetrably tight trio. Gary took great pleasure in wholeheartedly spoiling his girls and the family dogs. They had wonderful adventures while traveling, but were happiest just being together. Whether watching birds play while sitting on the deck or walking alongside deer at the park, the trio was immeasurably happy simply because they were together.

Using a turntable and many stacks of vinyl, Gary painstakingly cultivated a taste for better music in his daughter, Aubrey. The family enjoyed countless concerts together — favourites included repeated trips to see Paul McCartney and local gigs downtown to watch Aubrey’s friends perform.

Gary is survived by his forever loving wife, Jeanne, adoring daughter, Aubrey, brothers Ken McInnis (nieces Hilary and Alice) and Ray McInnis (nephew Brent), sister-in-law Marilyn (Dave; niece Christine and her husband Kris), brother-in-law Donald (Erica; nephews DJ, Tommy and Alex) and many more dear relatives in Nova Scotia and Scotland. A gentle soul and compassionate animal whisperer, Gary was a calm natural with all creatures great and small. Family dog, Freddy, revelled in Gary’s affection and is also in mourning.

Since we are unable to gather, Jeanne and Aubrey suggest raising a glass to Gary during the next Flames vs. Oilers game and making a memorial donation in his name to the Calgary Humane Society by calling 403-723-6000. Gary would love that. Lastly, the family sends its gratitude to those of the nurses, student nurses and doctors who may have seen the face of their own father in Gary and went above and beyond in their attentive care. Thank you. Condolences and memories may be shared on Gary’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Gary McInnis, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis and Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
