Obituary of Nicholas Dennis OLEYNICK

December 25, 1924 – Rohizno, Poland November 16, 2017 – Mississauga, Ontario Nicholas (Nick) Oleynick slipped his earthly bonds on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the age of 92 years. Nicholas was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He came to Canada in 1929 from Poland and moved to Ethelbert, Manitoba. In 1937 his family moved to Winnipeg. He attended University of Manitoba, where in 1943 he enlisted in the Canadian Army. Serving as a Lieutenant, his scientific interest drew him towards the majesty of flying, and Nick transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he served as a navigator and aerial gunner. During 1944 while stationed briefly in Regina, Nick met Margaret Madeleine Brasnett and a spark was lit. Upon the end of WWII, Nick returned to his studies at the University of Manitoba and obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree. Upon graduation he took a position of teaching grade school for a school term. In 1949 Nick took a position with Maple Leaf Mills Ltd and worked in West Toronto, and later in Port Colborne, before transferring to Calgary in July 1952. On October 18, 1952 Nick and Madeleine became engaged and were married on April 25th, 1953. Together they raised four children: Susan, Michael, Dianne, and Joanne in Calgary, while Nick continued his career with Maple Leaf Mills and were active members in the Stanley Park / Park Hill Community Association. In 1970 Nick accepted a promotion with MLM, resulting in moving the family to Mississauga, ON. There he enjoyed his family and home. Never intimidated by the prospect of work or the scope of a project, Nick decided the family would enjoy a pool in Toronto’s hot summers. With help from his family and a few friends, Nick built an inground 18 x 36 foot swimming pool, with surrounding deck. Once built, Nick truly enjoyed much of his home time relaxing around the pool with family, neighbors and friends. As the Director of Quality Control Assurance, he travelled extensively, including being sent as a representive for the Canadian Government Foreign Aide Office while providing milling industry expertise to Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago. Nick enjoyed family, friends, holiday traveling, community living and all the while appreciating the great outdoors. Nick retired in 1988 and moved back to Calgary, where he sadly lost his love Madeleine to illness in 1991. Nick lived in Calgary, enjoying a quiet life around his family until 1998 when he returned to Ontario to be closer to his daughter Joanne and friend Eileen. Nick remained in Mississauga enjoying friends and family until his passing in November 2017. He was a gentle grandfather to his grandchildren: Christopher and Aulora Oleynick, and Nicholas Sharpe. Nick is survived by his four children: Susan Gregory; Michael (Dianne) Oleynick, Dianne Oleynick (Dave), Joanne (Roger) Haskins. He was predeceased by his wife of thirty-eight years, Madeleine Oleynick; sister Sylvia (Harry) Korobchuk, brother Dymetro (“Mike”) Oleynick.
