Obituary of Edward Thomas ZAN

September 23, 1932 – Webster, Alberta
October 22, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Edward (ED) Zan, beloved husband of Valiere Zan (nee Long), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the age of 88 years.

Ed was born to Joseph and Stella Zan on September 23, 1932 in Webster, AB. He was the middle of three children with older brother John (Helen) and younger sister Theresa (Joseph) Zajac. Ed was raised on the homestead near Webster until he moved to Calgary to attend SAIT and completed his surveying and drafting diploma. He met Valiere in 1964 when they both worked in the same office building. They were married June 5, 1966 and settled down in Northwest Calgary where they raised their three boys. In 1990, Ed accepted an early retirement from Talisman Energy (formerly British Petroleum). Val and Ed decided to sell their Calgary home and move out to their acreage in the forest near Caroline, AB.  They took the next few years building their dream home. The acreage was their happy place where they cultivated great friendships and had a strong circle of friends that loved helping each other, playing cards and sharing stories. They sold the acreage in 2005 and headed back to Calgary to be closer to family.

Ed accomplished many things in his life and overcame many obstacles. He was very proud of his family and enjoyed spending countless hours working in his garage and workshop. He was an avid mechanic and woodworker/carpenter and could fix nearly anything he set his mind to. In his later years he loved watching golf and game shows, working on puzzles and visiting with his family.

In 2015, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and battled numerous complications and setbacks due to this illness. His final residence for the past year was at Millrise Seniors Village in the long-term care. The family would like to thank all the staff that cared for him.

Ed (Papa) will always be remembered for his calm nature and love of family and his fondness of animals. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Ed will always be lovingly remembered by his wife Valiere, eldest son David, middle son Peter and youngest son Mark (Monique Thompson Zan); and grandsons, Owen, Elliot and Christian. He is also survived by his sister Theresa and sister-in-law Helen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Edward was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Stella Zan, brother John and brother-in-law Joseph Zajac.
