Obituary of Christine Ann KOWEL

June 30, 1944 – Calgary, Alberta January 21, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta Christine Ann Kowel (nee Murphy) of Calgary, passed away on January 21, 2018 at the age of 73 years. Besides her loving husband Doug Kowel, whom she would have celebrated her fiftieth wedding anniversary with on November 9th of this year, Christine is survived by her two children and their spouses, Paul and Liz Kowel and Kathleen and Ken Rothe. She is also survived by her four beautiful grandchildren, David and Carter and twins, Kevin and Sophie. Christine was predeceased by her parents, Charles David Murphy and Marie Kathleen Murphy; her brother, Graham Murphy; and sister, Erin Murphy. Christine will also be sadly missed by her caring relatives and very special friends. Some very special times highlighted her business and social career some of which were her involvement with, Stockyards Oil & Gas, Ranch Discount Food Mart, Ranch Kitchen & Bar, Alyth Shopping Centre Limited, Husky Oil, Canadian Superior Oil, where in 1968 she met a wonderful person by the name of Doug, Saddledome Foundation and Hockey Canada, Calgary Booster Club: volunteer work including Olympic involvement in the initial bid phase of pursuing the 1988 Olympic Games. Christine was hired by ISL of Lausanne, Switzerland to run their office in Calgary (at the Palliser Hotel) for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games. ISL was the marketing arm of top sponsors involved with the International Olympic Committee for the Games of Calgary ’88! Christine was also a member of the Calgary Glencoe Club for over sixty-five years. Christine did it “her way” with compassion and kindness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church.
