Obituary of Teruaki “Glen” KONO

November 4, 1928 - Powell River British Columbia

November 13, 2020 - Calgary    Alberta

Glen passed away in the evening hours of November 13, 2020 in Calgary, AB.

He was born on November 4, 1928 in Powell River, BC along with his brother Henry (deceased), his sister Joy (deceased), and his surviving sister Mary. During WWII, Glen spent his early teenage years at an internment camp in New Denver BC, and then moved to Ontario after the war as part of the forced relocation of Canadian citizens of Japanese descent. He lived a good life, with many friends and family over the years, and he will be missed by many.

Glen worked for the CBC as a graphic designer, even though he was colour-blind, which wasn’t a problem until colour television came in, after which his colleagues told him which colours were appropriate and marked the paints accordingly. The shows he worked on included Mr. Dressup, and Wayne and Shuster. After retirement, he occasionally worked as an “extra” on certain period films, as, appropriately, an older Japanese-Canadian man.

Glen’s great passion was tennis, and his desire to have new experiences and be close to family resulted in him moving often after retirement. Glen lived in Neath, Wales; Mountain, Ottawa and Toronto, ON; Courtenay and Victoria, BC before finally making Calgary, AB home.

Glen was married twice, first to Nobuko May Sagara (divorced) who predeceased him in 2007; and then to Betty Webb who predeceased him in 2014. He had three children with his first wife Nobuko, April (John), Kathy (Chris), and Michael (Lucinda). He is survived by seven grandchildren, Michael, Stephanie, Sabrina, Stephan, Paul, Emiko, and Elska. Glen also had close ties to his step-daughter Lorraine Webb and her son Tyler.

We wish to thank the Sage Hill staff for their compassionate care for Glen. We hope you remember with fondness his tap dance of joy.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favourite charity would be greatly appreciated. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Glen’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
