Obituary of John J.H. POITRAS

January 1, 1925 – Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan
November 25, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

John Poitras, beloved husband of Noreen Poitras (deceased in July 2019), passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at the age of 95 years.

John was born on New Year’s Day, January 1, 1925 and had a twin sister, Jeanne.  He also had an older sister Antoinette and an older brother George. 

He attended Teacher’s College in Saskatoon there after worked as a school teacher and principal in Green Lake, Saskatchewan.  In 1956 he worked in the oil and gas industry for twenty-eight years before retiring in 1986.

John was an avid athlete and participated intensively in curling and tennis at the Calgary Winter Club.  He and his wife, Noreen enjoyed travelling, but most of all enjoyed summers at Mabel Lake, BC.

Sergeant John Poitras was a Second World War veteran and was recognized for his service in a ceremony in March 2020 by David Chartrand (a member of the board of governors of the Métis National Council).

John is survived by his children, Colette Faas of Switzerland, André Poitras of Calgary; grandchildren, Cameron of Calgary, and Trevor of Edmonton, AB; as well as nieces and nephews and their families.
