Obituary of Alberto IAMARTINO

July 18, 1922 – Sepino, Campobasso, Italy
November 23, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

Alberto Iamartino passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, November 23, 2020 at the age of 98.

Alberto was born in Sepino, Campobasso, Italy. He immigrated to Canada in 1952; and married Cristina, his faithful wife, in 1958. Together they had two loving daughters, Serafina and Assunta. With time, Alberto would happily welcome two sons-in-law, Michael and Gio, and a growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom Alberto adored and loved spending time with.

Later in life, Alberto enjoyed reflecting at what a true adventure his life was. After surviving a World War, which led him from Italy, to North Africa, and to England; his journey eventually guided him to a new life in Canada.

Canada was everything Alberto hoped for. Very quickly he was able to create his own Importing Company and Italian specialty store, “Great West Italian Importers”.  A tremendous source of pride for Alberto was that after sixty years and three generations, both his family and his Company were still together and strongly united.

To his beloved and adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was simply known as Nonno ‘Berto’. Each had their own special relationship with him, watching Sunday football, helping him garden and of course enjoying his epic barbecue cookouts. One thing all of Alberto’s family agree on is that the happiest moments were spent in Alberto’s big back yard. Summers were spent fishing, swimming or boating on the lake until dark, playing all types of games, with extended family and friends, or going for a skate in winter with a warm fire waiting in the living room. To all his kids Alberto was bigger than life and his home was the happiest place they knew.

Alberto believed in selflessly sharing his success, helping family, and friends and often complete strangers in any way he could. Whether it was a helping hand, sharing his philosophy and encouragement to take chances and live life to the fullest, or offering his own home to new friends looking to start a life in Canada, Alberto touched many lives. He will be lovingly remembered by many, for leaving this world much better than he found it.

A special thank you to the amazing nurses who did all they could to help Alberto in his time of need, in particular, our family’s sincere gratitude to Mary, whom Alberto very fondly appreciated.
