Obituary of Maria MODNYJ (nee Kudriya)

March 25, 1926 – Lemanske, Ukraine
December 3, 2020 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Maria Modnyj of Calgary, AB, on Thursday, December 3, 2020, at the age of 94 years.

Maria was born in Lemanske, Ukraine and at age 14 was taken away from her parents by the Germans. After the war, she married Walter Modnyj and they immigrated to Brazil as refugees with their daughter Helen. Their son Jerry Modney (deceased) was born in 1954 and in 1955, the family immigrated to Canada where Tamara Modnyj (deceased) was born in 1962. Maria was an active member of the Assumption Ukrainian Catholic Church. She was very talented in many fields.

Maria is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and John Kiszczak; grandchildren, Paul (Charlene) and Andrew (Sharon) Kiszczak, and Kathleen Modney; great-grandchildren, Justin and Camryn; daughter-in-law Celeste Modney, niece Donna (Tom) Houghton, and nephews, Larry (Dorie) Modney and Bob Modney.

Maria was predeceased by her daughter Tamara, her husband Walter, her son Jerry.
