Obituary of Randy Douglas SMITH

December 15, 1975 – Calgary, Alberta January 4, 2018 – High River, Alberta Randy, of Okotoks, AB, passed away on January 4, 2018 at the age of 42 years. Randy Douglas Smith was born on December 15, 1975, son of Lorne and Hilda Smith. At a very early age he was diagnosed by the Alberta Children’s Hospital as a special needs person with developmental challenges. He attended the Providence Child Development Training Center and then special classes within the Calgary School System. He later completed his schooling in Okotoks and then graduated from the Okotoks Composite High schools special needs class. While attending school in Okotoks, he lived with his parents on an acreage near Priddis, Alberta, there he enjoyed country life and was part of the handicapped riding program. He enjoyed music, RV camping, house and pleasure boating and the family’s recreational home in BlindBay B.C. for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors. Upon leaving the school system he spent a number of years with the AIM Society (Advocacy in Motion Society for Persons with Developmental Disabilities), where he worked at many jobs (courier route, Recycling facility, chip factory and filling pop machines at the schools in Okotoks). He was kept involved in the Community. Due to a number of medical challenges which confined Randy to a wheel chair, he became a resident of the Long Term Care Unit 200 in the High River Hospital where he was loved and cared for by many staff and residents. Special thanks to all staff at the High river Hospital. Randy was predeceased by his grandparents Beryl and Harold Smith, Annie and John Stavast, his infant brother Bradley Raymond Smith, his cousin Devon McIsaac and uncle Romeo Fame. He has numerous Aunts, Uncles and cousins: Matt and Vicky Stavast and their son Gordon, Mary and Wayne Thomson and their three sons Dwayne, Blaine and Brent, Shirley and Wally Tityk and their two children Ronda and Rick, Marge Fame and her two daughters Sheila and Tammy. He also had a special couple in his life Marge and Ron Wawryn and their daughter Shelly. Randy was a very special and complicated young man, who enjoyed life in spite of his challenges and was loved by many in his short life. Funeral Services will be held at High River Baptist Church (514160-121st Street East, High River, AB) on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church hall.
