Obituary of Shirley Olive WHARTON

September 28, 1926 – Winnipeg, Manitoba December 24, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta Shirley Wharton, beloved wife of Bob Wharton of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at the age of 91 years. Shirley was born and raised in Winnipeg, where she attended Gordon Bell High School and Winnipeg Business College. She met engineering student and future husband Bob while working as the secretary of the University of Manitoba Student’s Union. They married on May 24, 1950, and settled in Edmonton where they raised three sons. Always active in sports, Shirley was an enthusiastic tennis player, hiker, curler, cross-country skier, and golfer – with the first hole-in-one in the family. She carried on lifelong pursuits of numerous artistic endeavours including cross-stitch, sewing, macramé and paper toll, and was an avid bridge player. Her care and compassion for others led her to volunteer at the Rockyview Hospital for fifteen years and work as secretary with Observation Nurseries for three years. Shirley created a large and loving legacy of family and friends. She leaves behind Bob, her loving husband of sixty-seven years; three sons: Donald (Melody), David (Kathleen Fox) and Thomas (Susan); five grandchildren: Matthew (Julia), Michael, Kelsey, Caitlin (Michael Trout) and William (Kayla); and one great-grandchild Jaxon Wharton. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Leanne. We are deeply appreciative of the kindness and care given to Shirley by the nurses, doctors and staff of the Rockyview Hospital.
