Obituary of Lois MacQueen ALGER

March 5, 1924 – Tisdale, Saskatchewan
January 6, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Lois Alger of Calgary, AB, died on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at the age of 96.

Lois was predeceased by her husband, Ross Alger, and by an infant daughter, Marion. She was also predeceased by two husbands whom she married later in life, Rev. Russel Beairsto and Dr. Gerald Hankins.

Lois is survived by her son Gordon (Marjorie), her daughters Libby and Frances (Dan McDonald), and her sister, Nan Bredin. She leaves four grandchildren, Katie Beck (Dan), Sara Hodgins (Liam), Morgan Alger (Charles Summers), and Ross Timothy Alger, as well as eight great-grandchildren.

Our mother was the embodiment of a generation that believed society was improved by kindness and that helping others was a duty of those more fortunate. She had a multitude of friends, drawn to her warmth, cheerfulness, and delightful sense of humour. She was passionate about books, ideas, intelligent debate, as well as the humble potato whether mashed, boiled or baked. Lois touched many lives and quietly, by example, showed that grace can prevail over meanness of spirit and that we are our brother’s keeper.

In living memory of Lois Alger, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.
