Dennis WALTERS

Obituary of Dennis William WALTERS

September 15, 1957 - Whitehorse, Yukon
January 12, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Dennis Walters, the well-loved husband of Jackie (nee Dunn), and Dad to Steven and Barry (Ranu) passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at his home in Calgary, AB at the age of 63 years.

Dennis was born in Whitehorse, YK on September 15, 1957 to Phyllis (nee Nelson) and LeRoy Walters, followed 14 months later by his sister Debra (Debbie) Mae Richer.

His dad was in the military and the family made several moves in Canada, being stationed in Whitehorse, YT, Halifax, NS, Ladner, BC, Edmonton, AB, then to Ottawa, ON, where his dad retired from the Forces and Dennis met Jackie.

Dennis, his sister Debbie, and Jackie met while working at A&P, the local supermarket, their part time job during high school. Dennis and Jackie were engaged six weeks after they started dating. Knowing Dennis, it is no surprise that their first date was a motorcycle ride along the Ottawa River. He married Jackie in 1978.

Dennis graduated from the three-year Civil Engineering Technology program at Algonquin College in Ottawa in 1979, where he made some long-time friendships.

An avid fisherman, he was a member and active volunteer with fishing conservation groups like the Western Walleye Council and Walleye Unlimited.

Dennis accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of winning the Golden Walleye Classic, a catch and release tournament on Lesser Slave Lake in 1991. What made it even more special was that his fishing partner was his dad. Beating out some world-class and celebrity fishermen was the icing on the cake.

The outdoors was his church. Dennis’ passion for fishing was legendary. Any kind of fishing. Lakes, streams, ocean; on open water or ice; from the shore, a kayak, a dock, on the fly, or from his beloved walleye boat, he loved it. And he excelled at it. He got his love of fishing from his dad and was delighted to pass on his passion to his sons. Other activities included hunting, camping, motorcycling, mountain biking, fly tying, crabbing, photography, skiing, snowshoeing, and sipping a good scotch.

Dennis loved vacationing at Tomahawk Resort on Lake of the Woods in northern Ontario where he fished for walleye, bass, and the elusive muskie. He also enjoyed fishing for bass in Clear Lake, in California. One of his most memorable vacations was taking a motorcycle trip to Yukon and Alaska on his BMW GS1100. Another memorable holiday was visiting Paris, London, and Scotland. He especially loved the west coast of Scotland. Is it a coincidence that the best distilleries were there?

Dennis will be remembered mainly for his love and respect for the outdoors. He was a planner and a researcher and avid online shopper...especially for fishing gear. He was direct and held strong opinions. You always knew where you stood. He loved to learn and shared his knowledge generously with others. In his family, Dennis will be remembered for his love of puns; some of which were actually good.

Besides his loving wife, Dennis is survived by his twin sons, Steven and Barry (Ranu) Walters, Calgary, AB. Dennis is also survived by his parents, Phyllis and LeRoy, his sister Debbie (Kevin Hortness), Sherwood Park, AB, nephew Daniel Richer (Miranda), niece Jennifer Stinchcombe (Scott); great-nephews, Owen and Nate Richer; and great-nieces; Mia St. Amant, Avery St. Amant, and Eliza Stinchcombe.

A Funeral Service will be held for 20 attendees, on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. All others are invited to join Mr. Dennis Walter’s service streamed live here on the day of the service. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
