Obituary of Donovan Abbott DOUGLAS

March 28, 1938 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
January 17, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Donovan (Don) Douglas, beloved husband of Patricia Douglas (nee Smyth) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at the age of 82 years.

Don was born in Winnipeg, MB, on March 28, 1938, a city he called home throughout his childhood years into adulthood. He later met Patricia Smyth and the two married in 1962, a journey they shared through fifty-nine years of marriage.

In 1966, Don graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Soon after, he accepted a position with Shell Canada which took the young couple to Oakville, ON. It is here that their family grew with the births of their children, Kevin and Shelby. After several years in Ontario, Don’s career took the family to California and later to Alberta where he remained with Shell until his retirement, in Calgary, in 1990.

Don accomplished much through his life; he also had an adventurous spirit and a passion for sailing, golf, painting and skiing, to name a few. He had a strong devotion for his family and friends, and was proud to be a Dad and loving husband.

Don and Pat were avid snowbirds and spent many winters in Arizona with dear friends and family. Over the years, they also traveled abroad, enjoying the sights and food of Europe, cruising Alaska and the Caribbean, or simply kicking back with family at the lake in Manitoba or Kelowna.

Besides his loving wife, Don is survived by his son Kevin (Val) and granddaughters, Kathleen and Emma and his daughter Shelby.  He is also survived by his sister Carolyn, brother-in-law Bill (Trudy) and sister-in-law Sharon.  He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Ken (Sharon’s husband) and brother-in-law Garth.

Celebration of life will take place at a later date. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Don’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

If family and friends so desire, memorial donations can be made in Don’s memory to a charity of your choice.

Don’s family would like to thank Dr. Maria Celis, the staff and care team at Walden AgeCare, Waterton Neighbourhood, for their kindness and support.

In living memory of Don Douglas, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
