Obituary of Doris Claire (née Bainbridge) FYVIE

May 21, 1930 – Viking, Alberta

January 7, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Doris Claire Fyvie (née Bainbridge), aged 90, passed away peacefully in Calgary on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

Doris was born in Viking, AB in 1930 and married Dr. James (Jim) Fyvie in 1955, who predeceased Doris in 2008. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her son Don, his wife Cindy and their daughter Maggie; daughter Barb and her husband Peter; son Gord and his wife Toni; sister Ruth Windsor and her husband Bill; sister-in-law Aileen Scott and all of her extended family.

Doris was the daughter of a United Church minister, so she lived in a number of towns in Alberta during her upbringing, including, Viking, Medicine Hat, High River, Didsbury and Westlock. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Alberta, where she was also elected President of the Wauneita Society (women’s representative on the U of A Student Council), and was a member of the U of A Mixed Chorus. Following graduation, Doris had a number of jobs, including with CN Rail conducting psychometric tests on new employees; as a case worker with the City of Edmonton’s Welfare Department and as the initial director at the Calgary Homemaker Service, helping disadvantaged new mothers. Not long after marrying Jim (1955) and following Jim’s internship, Doris and Jim took their first of many big adventures together when they moved to Europe (Southport, England, followed by Copenhagen, Denmark) while Jim was working for the Canadian Government. This ignited a life-long love of travel. When they returned to Canada, they settled in Calgary, where Doris became a member of the Junior League, the church choir, curled, enjoyed theatre and tennis, learned to ski and golf, all whilst raising their 3 kids. Once her children had left home, Doris trained as a travel agent and later was a docent at the Glenbow Museum. In addition to far-reaching travel, Doris and Jim enjoyed spending time with friends and family in Kelowna, Lake Windermere and, increasingly, in Scottsdale, Arizona, where they made many new friends. While Doris suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in her final years, she was still able to share many good times with family.

The family would like to thank all staff at Staywell Manor for taking such excellent care of Doris for the past 3.5 years and for the additional care provided by the carers at Home Instead.
