Obituary of Donald WEISS

November 15, 1928 – Lashburn, Saskatchewan
January 24, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Today our family lost our husband, father, Papa, and best friend. Donald Weiss, husband, father, Papa and best friend of Calgary, AB passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at the age of 92 years.

Don was so much to so many. His passions were golf, playing bridge, cooking, hosting great parties and spending glorious times with mom traveling across America and Mexico but his heart will always be with mom.  Don was born in Lashburn, SK, in 1928 to a large family. He traveled around doing odd jobs and landed in Vancouver as a bus driver. He went into the office one morning, where Shirley was the secretary, and he said to his buddy, “I’m going to marry that girl!”  And that he did!  The young couple settled in Calgary near her parents and they started their family. Don was the proud member of the Shrine in Alberta, Saskatchewan and California. Don was a traveling salesman for many years in Western Canada and then took an opportunity to buy a Gondola Pizza, then four more. Don and Shirley and their children worked long hours at the restaurants and they were able to retire at forty-seven when they moved to Palm Springs, California. Don loved his time in California with Shirley.  Golfing and making friends was their life. They moved back to Canada and settled in West Kelowna for fifteen wonderful years!  They moved on to Calgary in 2018 to complete their circle and they enjoyed their life in the senior’s home where Don ran the bridge program.

Don is survived by his adoring wife Shirley of sixty-seven years and his children, Kirk (Jill), Jan (Doug), Kevin (Lynda) and Karen (Jeff);  his eight grandchildren, Vicki, Greg, Alicia, Ian, Jordan, Katlin, Emily and Sarah; and seven great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Braden, Conner, Joshua, Jordan, Walter and Lilah.

Unfortunately, Covid19 cut Don’s life short and he fought the brave battle for twenty-one days. Don and our family want to deeply thank the Rockyview Hospital and Dr. Carmen Rosa Gittens for her kindness and grace and the wonderful Nurses who remained by his side when the family could not be there. A truly amazing team!

In memory of Don, the family will be having a private family celebration. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Don’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Donald Weiss, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
