January 24, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Michael Marthold, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at the age of 91 years.

Michael was born in Schwabach Germany on April 13th, 1929 and immigrated to Canada in 1954, settling in Calgary in 1955 where he became a Canadian soldier stationed at Currie Barracks, serving with the PPCLI Airborne division as a paratrooper.  After leaving the service he joined Irving Industries in Calgary in 1957 where he had a long and successful career until his retirement in 1999.

Michael was an avid sportsmen, athlete, bowler, hunter, camper and skier, both water and snow.  He walked generations of dogs around the Ramsay neighborhood, where he was a long-time resident.  He remained active with most physical activities well into his 80’s and was able to live comfortably at home until the last 6 months of his life when he was at the Colonel Belcher Extended Care facility.

Michael was predeceased by his loving wife of 41 years Hilda, in 1997 but is survived by his two devoted sons, Michael (Bobbi) and William (Belia); and his adoring granddaughters, Lindsay (Byron) and Samantha.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Germany, where he travelled to often.  Michael found love again and remarried in 2002 to his second wife Muriel, who introduced him to some new experiences until her passing in 2011.

Michael was a kind and gentle person who exemplified the phrase “still waters run deep”.  He had a very adventurous and meaningful life.   He will be deeply missed by his family and friends who knew and loved him.

A private family service will be held to celebrate his life in February.
