Obituary of Spencer Samuel CHAMBERS

July 6, 1931 – South Norwich, Ontario November 29, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta Spencer beloved husband of Wendy Chambers (nee Streitberg) of Calgary, AB, passed away on November 29, 2017 at the age of 86 years. Born July 6, 1931, in South Norwich, Ontario, the son of David and Evelyn (nee Maunder) Chambers. Spencer grew up on a farm in Southern Ontario. After graduating with a B.Sc. Honours in Geology from the University of Western Ontario, he moved west to Alberta in 1953. He was employed by Imperial Oil Limited from 1953 to 1959 and was a principal participant in the interpretation leading to the discovery of the Swan Hills field. In 1959 he left for Australia and continued his career as a geophysicist, where he was notably involved in the discovery of the Mereenie oil & gas field in the Amadeus Basin. He often commented that he went to Australia with one suitcase and returned to Canada with a wife, three children and house full of furniture. From 1968 to 1972 he worked as a geophysical consultant, and transitioned in 1972 to a career with Columbia Gas Development; retiring in 1990 as President, CEO and Director. During his time with Columbia Gas he was a member of the Hibernia Management Committee which negotiated the terms for the project’s development, was a signatory to the Statement of Principles of Hibernia, and ultimately negotiated the sale of Columbia’s interest in the field. After he retired, he and Wendy continued to travel the world and Spencer spent many happy hours with his children and grandchildren. An avid golfer, he was a member of Willow Park Golf & Country Club from 1968 to 2016 and greatly enjoyed playing golf with his good friends the Thrashers, regretfully putting aside his clubs at the age of 85. Spencer is survived by his wife of 56 years of marriage, Wendy Chambers (nee Streitberg); his daughter Katrina, his daughter Catherine and son-in-law Carl Smith, his son John and daughter-in-law Karin; his six grandchildren, Margaret, Gavin, Jakob, Maya, George and Alexia; and his brothers Don and Howard. At Spencer’s request, a private burial and family gathering will be held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
