December 1, 1935 - February 17, 2021

Arthur Lance Alexander of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at the age of 85 years.

Lance was born in Calgary, AB, Canada on December 1, 1935. He was the second youngest of five children and the last of his siblings to pass away. Including his mother, all of whom struggled with dementia. His mother Theta passed away in 2003, his father Robert in 1969.

Lance graduated from Crescent Heights High School in 1954. During his years in high school, he coached the senior girls’ basketball team. Lance had a varied work career starting as an accounting clerk with an oil company in Calgary. He also travelled to London England and worked at Harrods for a couple of years. One of his favourite stories was when he helped Queen Elizabeth purchase a tie for Prince Philip.

He had several other work experiences ending his career as a social studies teacher at Central Memorial High School. His principal spent time chatting with Lance about life and was impressed with his general knowledge and intelligence. Lance played a good game of golf, not quite as good as his older brother Keith. Lance curled in the winter at the North Hill Curling Club and played bridge regularly. After retirement, Lance spent part of most days at the Market Mall in NW Calgary which he called his office. He had a favourite table in the Food Court where he had coffee and read the morning paper. Some days his brother Jack and/or sister Donna joined him for a visit and to walk the mall together.

Lance was diagnosed with dementia and spent some time in the Foothills hospital until he moved to the Beverley in SE Calgary for a number of years. He was moved to the Brentwood Care Centre in 2016. He was a favourite resident at Brentwood and received excellent care from all of the staff.
