David DAVIS

Obituary of David J.H. DAVIS

March 2, 1926 – Birmingham, England

March 29, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

David Davis, beloved husband of Sherree, passed peacefully on Monday, March 29, 2021, following a significant stroke last Thursday evening.

Over the last year, through all the pandemic, David was a resident of the Brentwood Care Centre. David began experiencing the effects of Alzheimer’s about two years ago and the advancement of this disease added to his challenges this past year. Born to Eric and Ella, David was the middle child, sandwiched between siblings, Melva, who passed in 2016, and Malcolm (Judy). David joined the Royal Navy (Fleet Air Arm) just after WWII, serving as a fighter pilot in Korea on the carrier HMS Theseus. On loan to the Canadian Navy in Halifax, David trained Canadian pilots and served on the HMCS Magnificent. Lt.-Commander Davis met Sub-Lieutenant Sheila Scott of Calgary at Shearwater, marrying in 1955. Christopher (Mirella Rullo) and Stuart arrived during a tour of duty in Northern Ireland, with Leslie born in Calgary following David’s retirement from the Royal Navy and a return to Canada. David and Sherree began their life together in 1983, after meeting on the dance floor at the Inn at Lake Bonavista. They tied the knot in 1984, celebrating their 36th anniversary this past April. David spent his working career in auto parts, with Calgary Motor Car Supply, Acklands in Vancouver, General Tire and finally, and Corbett’s (Genuine Parts / NAPA), retiring in 1994. Although playing cricket and squash in his youth, David in mid-life focused on his golf, enjoying the game and many lifelong friendships at Willow Park GC. Not long off the tee, but deadly straight and true on the green, he was rarely out of the low ‘80s. Always an officer and a gentleman, even on the occasional miss he might only be heard to mutter a quiet eponymous …“oh Davis”. Sherree and David had great success with duplicate bridge, with David occasionally leaving his partnership with Sherree to join the guys in mens’ play at both the Glencoe and the Ranchmen’s. David was an avid organizer of bridge at the Glencoe, chairing the committee for more than a decade. He was a gentleman to the very end, with RN’s Jessica, Amrit and their Catherine and her team at Brentwood Nursing Home describing him as the “supervisor”. He who would wheel around the 3rd floor conducting his evening inspections and holding various board meetings keeping everything in order.

In addition to his three children and granddaughter Madeleine, David embraced being a stepdad to the entire Yunker clan, Mark (Stacy), Joy (David), Gerard, James (Susie) and Rebecca (Tammy) and eight amazing grandchildren and the first “great” on the way!

David, never a quitter, held on to this mortal coil for as long as his body could sustain him. We know that he has commenced going about his next organizing duties in the hereafter. Love you and miss you Dad!

A Private Funeral Service will be held. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on David’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
