Obituary of Pamela Evelyn MCLEAN

May 8, 1921 – Durban, South Africa October 12, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Pamela Evelyn McLean (nee Gibson), who slipped away peacefully in her sleep on October 12, 2017 at the age of 96, with family by her side. Pamela was the beloved wife of the late A. Stuart McLean. They are now together again for eternity. Pamela was loved by all and is survived by her five children, Rod Stewart (Doris), Kim Stewart, Dawn Hicks, Jonathan McLean (Brenda) and Rawn Sexsmith (Tim); her seven grandchildren, Nadia Stewart, Spencer Stewart (Cheryl), Dan Bourque (Appa), Logan Sexsmith (Carrie), Tyson Sexsmith (Chantel), Bryce McLean and Kelsey McLean; and her six great-grandchildren, Sutton and Mason Sexsmith, Lachlan and Evie Stewart, and Stockton and Hudson Sexsmith. Pamela is also survived by her long-time friend, companion and care giver Beryl Lyons and her loving dog Rudy who was always by her side. Pamela lived a grand life that began in Durban, South Africa in 1921, born to English parents Doris and Frederick Gibson. The family returned to England where Pamela received her education at the Chichester High School for Young Ladies. During the Second World War Pamela drove an ambulance in the streets of London during the Blitz, doing her part for the war effort and helping to save many wounded civilians. In 1942 Pamela married Herbert Stewart, a pilot from Canada serving in the Canadian Airforce. In 1943 Herbert was repatriated to Canada and off they went. Many tours of duty followed and many different bases were called home. In 1957 Herbert was killed in an airplane accident while on a NATO peacekeeping mission in Germany, leaving Pamela with three young children (Rod, Kim and Jon) to care for, which she did with enthusiasm and always with grace. Pamela moved back to Canada, and this time settled in Calgary, which was her home for the rest of her life. In 1968 Pamela married Stu and they started a wonderful new life together, with their family of five. Pamela and Stu lived in south Calgary, Priddis and finally in Lake Midnapore, which was their final home together and where Pamela lived until shortly before she passed. Pamela and Stu loved life and loved to travel. They spent many a month in their tropical paradise at the Castle Surf in Honolulu. They also loved to spend warm summer days at the family cabin at St. Ives on Shuswap Lake. Many a lively family discussion took place around the small kitchen nook of the cabin with a good bottle of wine. Pamela and Stu travelled to many other places in Canada and around the World. They would set off by motor home across Canada; they would travel by train across the Rockies; they would travel to far flung places like New Zealand to visit old and new friends. Favourites for Pamela and Stu, for which they both had a huge love, were England and Scotland, where they visited frequently. Pamela loved the Royal Family and all things Royal, and followed them intently with great interest right up until her passing. Pamela also loved her numerous animals, most of all her beloved dogs. She was an ardent gardener and a wonderful homemaker for her family. We were lucky to have this proper “British Lady” in our lives and we will miss her dearly.
