Obituary of Douglas "Doug" Paul KOMERY

September 2, 1934 – Thetford Mines, Quebec

July 9, 2021 – Calgary, Alberta

Douglas Komery of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 9, 2021, at the age of 86 years.

Doug was a kind, generous, selfless, humble, positive and optimistic person. He was dedicated to his work and loved what he did (“We had a lot of fun”). He worked for fifty years without a single sick day (“Holy Mackarel Sapphire!”), mostly with Shell Canada, as well as Husky, and Alberta Oil Sands Technology Research Authority (AOSTRA). As dedicated as he was to his work, he was always more dedicated to his family.

Doug attended Bishops University for two years, ultimately graduating with an engineering degree from McGill. He played basketball for both of the schools and was part of a fraternity. He started his career with Shell Canada, and that is where he met Lorna. They wed in 1967, moved out west in 1974, and lived together in the same house for forty-five years. For two of those years, however, he was transferred to Edmonton for work. Again, putting his family first, and not wanting to disrupt his kids’ high school experience, he lived there alone travelling home to Calgary every weekend, until he was ultimately transferred back to Calgary. He was a dedicated employee, father, husband, brother, and friend.

Doug loved the Okanagan, laying in the sun with rocks on his eyelids and between his toes. He made his dreams come true when he built his “country home” in Invermere, which he designed himself and oversaw every step of the way.

Doug is survived by his sister Diana, daughter Natasha “Tasha”, and her partner John (Hiebert), son Christopher “Chris”, daughter-in-law Tanya, and two grandchildren, Carson and Hayden. Doug was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lorna in 2019. He joins Lorna and his brothers, Bob and Irwin on the other side and will be deeply missed by those who remain.

A Public Funeral Service will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend may join Mr. Komery’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Those who wish to make a memorial tribute may consider a donation to Calgary Health Foundation (Specific Area, Suite 800, 11012 Macleod Trail S.E., Calgary, AB  T2J 6A5, Telephone: (403)943-0615, www.thetrust.ca.), or to their favourite charity, in Doug’s name.

The family extends their appreciation and gratitude to the medical and care teams at Foothills Medical Centre, Orthopaedic Surgery department, Peter Lougheed Centre and their Internal Medicine department as well as, Carewest, and Southwood Hospice.

In living memory of Douglas Komery, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
