Obituary of ElizaBeth HAGGINS

March 31, 1923 – Kurtitschky, Crimea, Russia
July 18, 2021– Calgary, Alberta

I have hosted my last dinner party; it was all of your favourites. I always had a goal of living to 100, just missed that mark but I hope I made my mark in this world. I have had a wonderful life filled with the love of my husband, our four beautiful children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many dear friends that I made over the last 98 years.

I was a 7 year old refugee Mennonite girl arriving in Canada from Russia in time for the Great Depression. My father died several years after we settled on a farm in Coaldale, leaving my mother to raise my brother and myself. We helped our mother by working in the sugar beet fields. It was hard work, but it provided us a home and a living. I loved learning and when I graduated from High School, I convinced my mother to let me venture to Calgary to attend business school. Then WWII hit. Those were heady days as the servicemen flocked to town and life at the YWCA was a whirlwind of dances and activity. After the war, while residing at a boarding house called the Wigwam, I met the love of my life and ‘knight in shining armour’, Gerald Haggins. We married in 1949, and with Uncle Esso moving us around, we set up homes in Edmonton, Dawson Creek, Lethbridge and Calgary. Our children began arriving in 1950, starting with Cidnee, soon followed by Scott, Kim and Fraser. My children and their families have been the light of my life and have brought me much joy. In retirement, we built our own Wigwam at the Shuswap and welcomed our children and grandchildren for summers of wonderful memories at Blind Bay.

As I have said, I have had a wonderful life! As I fly high to my new home know that the sparkle in my eye will always be looking down over you!

A special I love you to my family, Cidnee and Henk and their children Aidan (Melanie), Evan (Shannon) and Sam (Yolanda); Scott and his partner Anna and his children Keeley (Trevor), Tate (Joyce), Cole (Natalie) and Ward (Melissa); Kim and Ron and their children Gord (Jane) and Emily (Terry); Fraser and Jane and their children Talana (Chris) and Alex. A special hug to my nineteen great-grandchildren!
