Obituary of Donald (Don) Lorne CAMPBELL

July 25, 1930 – Westlock, Alberta
August 21, 2021– Jasper, Alberta

Donald Campbell, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday in Jasper at the age of 91 years.

Don was born in Westlock, AB to Lorne and Aileen Campbell, the youngest of five children. Don graduated with a Master’s degree in Geology from the University of Alberta in 1956 where he was a Delta Upsilon Fraternity brother. He was a proud life member of APEGGA. Don was a charming and generous man who shared his passion with his family and communities in Calgary and Jasper. He shared his love of the outdoors and led by example, always willing to share a laugh or story with those around him. A summer trip in 1944 with his father began his lifelong love for Jasper, which progressed to family ownership of a cabin at Lake Edith. As a young man Don worked as a gardener at the Jasper Park Lodge and a fishing guide at Maligne Lake. His adventures skiing the glaciers and hiking extensively cemented his love for the area. Don remained active throughout his life; skiing, golfing, hiking, gardening, and always had a project on the go. He and his wife Marilyn raised their three girls with a love of the outdoors and a passion for community. In retirement, he and Marilyn enjoyed many long walks on the beach during winters in Mazatlan. As a young geologist Don spent time exploring in Canada’s Arctic.  Later in his career he made many trips to the Middle East as a consulting geologist. These experiences helped develop his lifelong interest in world events and a deep appreciation for different cultures. Within his community he understood the need to take action and would lead by example. This was evidenced by his involvement in the United Church, political parties and as a pioneer and volunteer in the Firesmart program in Jasper.

Don truly enjoyed good conversations on finance and current events. His grandchildren fondly remember listening to stories of his younger days and the life lessons that were always intertwined. Guests were always welcome and he charmed everyone he met with a smile to his last days.

Don is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Dorothy MacAulay (Brett), Catherine Campbell-Wilson (Richard), and Carolyn Bosch (Gerard); his eight grandchildren, Janey Parks (Brendan), Mary Pupo (Anthony), Robert McPhalen (Iniki), Alexander Bosch (Taylor), Trevor Bosch (Brittany), Julie Bosch (Brendan), Joan Wilson and Ross Wilson, and his three and three quarter great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved sister Lorna Fraser of St. Albert, AB and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Marilyn Annetta Campbell.
