Obituary of Gertrude Esther Sampson

September 12, 1930 – Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan

September 5, 2021 – Didsbury, Alberta

Gertrude “Buddy” Esther Sampson (nee Haenni) passed away peacefully on the warm, sunny morning of September 5, 2021, at the age of 90 years.

She graduated from the Weyburn Collegiate with honors in 1948, receiving a hardcover Emily Bronte’ for her academic achievements. Buddy went on to marry Keith Sampson on August 30 1958, moving to Calgary where they began their life together. She was an accomplished gardener – her vegetables, flowers and lawn were always perfect and a delight to experience. Her career spanned decades, ranging from banking to customer service, with a focus on integrity and thoroughness.

Buddy was a devoted confidant to her family and lifelong friends – there was plenty of laughter and affection while sharing many adventures. Buddy had a great sense of humor and loved jokes. She enjoyed going to sporting events, equestrian show jumping, bingo, the casino and afternoon drinks with friends.  She loved all music, especially Hymns which she knew too many to count by heart. It is no surprise that the final melody she hummed along with in her signature perfect pitch was “Jesus Loves Me”!

Buddy is survived by her two daughters, Lynn and Janice, as well as her son-in-law, Mike Deans. Her grandchildren Dayle and Tanner were the apple of her eye; she spoke of them with enthusiasm and pride, and loved helping them grow into the wonderful young people they are today.

As per her wishes, Buddy will be joining her family back in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. In her memory, please pour a rum and coke, and reflect on a happy time or two.

In living memory of Gertrude Sampson, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Airdrie, 300 Towerlane Drive, Airdrie, AB T4B 3L8, Telephone: 403-948-1100.
