Obituary of Magda Ryckman

January 9, 1929 – Windsor, Ontario

September 15, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

 

Magda Ryckman of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at the age of 92 years. She passed away after experiencing complications from the COVID-19 virus.

 

Magda lit up every room that she entered with her contagious smile and was known for her generosity, kindness and keen sense of humor. The arts were forefront for her in her earlier years and she became an accomplished artist, putting herself through school with art scholarships. Her art, in watercolor, oil and charcoal hang in many homes across Canada and the US. Magda was also an accomplished country and western songwriter, singer and guitar player, who toured and appeared on television many times including on the Don Messer’s Jubilee TV show. She also collaborated on music with the legendary, Rita McNeil and wrote the award-winning song “The Alberta Waltz”. She was also known as a passionate and loyal fan of the Calgary Stampeders Football team. She raised her only child, Larry, as a single parent working first in the arts and then as a realtor, moving from Toronto to Edmonton and ultimately settling in Calgary, where she passed. As a lover of children, she also owned and ran Mount Royal Day Care for several years.

 

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Larry and Elaine; grandchildren, Lauren, Aaron and Kiera; and two great-grandchildren, Ryder and Myles; along with numerous nieces and nephews in both Canada and the US. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family.
