Obituary of L. Stewart Duncan

April 26, 1934 - September 18, 2021

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Stewart Duncan, beloved husband of Ferne, on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the age of 87 years.

Stewart was born April 26, 1934 to Mary and Lorne Duncan in Reston, MB. His father was a grain buyer, moving their family  to many small towns throughout Manitoba. He was a scholar and athlete in school winning many awards for academics and field days. Stewart  began his professional career at the Bank of Nova Scotia. He enjoyed great success with the bank, that had his family moving across the country, arriving in Calgary, as main branch manger in 1973.  Stewart left the bank in the late 70’s and became an entrepreneur in finance, oil and gas, and wind power. He retired at the young age of 85, as Chief Executive Officer of Alberta Wind Energy. Stewart volunteered his time and expertise to a number of community boards such as: the United Church, Scouts Canada, the YMCA, the United Way, and the Alberta and Canadian Cancer Societies. He enjoyed a long association with the Downtown Rotary Club of Calgary and the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation. He was an honoured  recipient of a  Paul Harris Fellow.

Stewart enjoyed time with his family, especially vacationing at Clear Lake MB where there was cycling, golfing, waterskiing, boating, bear watching at the dump, and always hiking. He particularly enjoyed his time at the Timberline cabin, as he loved the mountains where he and Ferne golfed, hiked and cross country skied with family and friends. He was a long standing golf member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club, as well as The Calgary Petroleum Club which was a favourite destination for business luncheons. He and his family enjoyed countless trips to Hawaii,  Europe, Nicaragua, and Panama. Stewart never missed an opportunity to drive to a destination - Disneyland, Tucson, Phoenix, and all across Canada.

Besides his loving wife Ferne of sixty-four years,  Stewart is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sherri and Stuart Blyth; son Bruce Duncan; grandchildren, Andrew Blyth (Terisita), Meagan Blyth, Graham Blyth (Blair), Jake Duncan and Mitch Duncan. Great-grandchildren, Alejandro, Naomi, Fernando, Willow, and Robson. Stewart is also survived by his sister Mary Moffat of Brandon, MB, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stewart was a generous man who willingly shared his knowledge and talents with others. He was humble, gentle and kind, and yet he was tough and determined to the very end.

A Celebration of Stewart’s Life will be announced for December 2021. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed here.
