Obituary of Bernard Charles Hunsperger

April 16, 1931 - Didsbury, Alberta
September 22, 2021 - Calgary, Alberta

Bernard Charles Hunsperger, or Barney as we all knew him was always courteous and polite, never uttering an unkind word.  Someone that you could depend on, a True Gentle Man.

Barney was born to a farming family in Didsbury, AB on April 16, 1931 and sadly left us on September 22, 2021.

Barney left the family farm when he was eighteen years of age to pursue an electrical apprenticeship with EC&M Electric in Calgary. During his apprenticeship he was also a bartender at the Beacon Hotel on the ladies side of the bar.  The ladies that frequented the bar always could get Mr. Hunsperger to blush which would just make him smile. The opportunity with EC&M would turn into a lifetime career which he retired from when he was sixty-five years old.   Not quite ready to fully retire he started his own electrical company, BH Systems and did a second retirement in 2015.

He met Fran when they worked together at EC&M Electric. They married in 1982 and spent a very happy thirty-nine years together.
Barney enjoyed many happy times with his family, both at home in Calgary and on the family farm.  Barney had three daughters, Debbie, Cheryl and Dayle.  Sadly Debbie and Cheryl left us too soon.  He had seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Barney and Fran enjoyed many trips both near and far.  One of his favorite trips was his first trip to Hawaii for their tenth wedding anniversary.  They enjoyed the Hawaiian Islands many times over the years.  Barney’s other loves were attending the Calgary Stampeders football games and enjoying the Calgary Stampede and Rodeo.  He was soft spoken most of the time, but yelled just as loud as everyone else when his favorite football team would score or someone had a good ride. He enjoyed downhill skiing and ten pin bowling.  He loved trains and had an extensive model train collection and train memorabilia.  Another favourite pastime was reading western novels. Barney’s main love was working on the farm.  He would pack a lunch and head out to the farm every Saturday morning. The old time country and western music playing along.   This was his time to reconnect with the past, plan for the future and to feel the earth and all its potential beneath his feet.  Many happy times were spent on the farm both alone and with family and friends.

He is now riding his tractor and surveying the slope of the land and saying “it’s a great day to be farming”.   Barney will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
