Brian George Toner of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at the age of 92 years.

 

Brian was born in Dodsland, SK on December 8, 1928. He was raised on the family farm with his two brothers and five sisters.  As a young man, Brian headed west to Edmonton, AB and shortly after, he began working with Esso Imperial Oil in Redwater, AB. Brian spent 36 years with Esso building his career and forming long-standing relationships, while working in small-town Southern Saskatchewan, Australia, rural Alberta and ultimately Calgary.

 

Shortly after starting his career with Esso, Brian married Norma Trotter and together they welcomed Glen, Marlene, Fred and Cathi. Following the loss of Norma, Brian married Grace Roesch and together welcomed Sheldon and Megan. Brian was later married to Peggy Miller and opened his heart to her children Rod, Jeff, David and Cathy and their families. Brian was a loving husband, and proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

 

Throughout his life, Brian enjoyed music, dancing, curling, travelling, golfing, and skiing. He shared in many adventures and activities with his family and friends over the years which will be fondly remembered.

 

Brian is survived by his wife, Peggy Miller, her children and grandchildren; siblings, Margaret Meyer, Pat Connor, Kay Smith and Danny Toner; children, Glen Toner (Sylvia Haines), Marlene (Dave) Mack, Fred Toner, Cathi Toner, Sheldon (Janet) Toner, and Megan (Bill) Bufton; grandchildren, Pamela Ushkowski (nee Mack), Kelly McGowan (nee Mack), Quinn Toner, Sebastian Toner, Benjamin Toner, Kaitlin Bufton and Liam Bufton; his great-grandchildren, Taylor, Erin and Victoria McGowan, Logan and Aliyah Ushkowski; and Marlene’s first daughter Kimberley Courtney and her children Courtney, Kessler, Easton and Kolton.

 

Brian was predeceased by his father, Daniel Toner; mother, Annie Toner (nee Taylor); former wife, Norma Toner (nee Trotter); ex-wife, Grace Toner (nee Roesch); brother, Doug Toner; sisters, June Fruhstuk (Johnston) and Joyce Radke.

 

Brian will be deeply missed by his family and the family he gained in his final years at Bow View Manor. The family would like to thank all the caregivers, nurses and his doctor at Bow View Manor (Alberta Diefenbaker) for their incredible compassion, dedication, care and love for Brian.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the Brenda Strafford Foundation in Brian’s memory.

 

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.  Interment to happen at a future date.

Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Those attending will be asked to confirm one of the following, (A) COVID vaccination (date requested), OR (B) a negative COVID test (within 72 hours), OR (C) Medical exemption AND valid government identification (with name & date of birth) OR (D) Under 12 years of age. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at time 2:00 p.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Toner’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
