Obituary of Ivan Sturm
MARCH 30, 1950 – OCTOBER 10, 2021
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ivan on Sunday, October 10, 2021.
Ivan was born in Medicine Hat, AB, Ivan, his sisters and parents carved out a piece of Alberta heritage as they ranched in the Cypress Hills of Alberta. He moved to Calgary in 1972 and has lived in both Longview and Calgary in the years to follow. Ivan was a gentle soul that repeatedly would give the shirt off his back for his friends and those in need. Ivan had a variety of jobs and business endeavors throughout his life but spent many of his later years working security at the Elbow River Casino. He absolutely loved that place, being surrounded by many amazing friends. His most special friends were Marivic and Melven who provided unconditional love and were always around to lend a helping hand.
Ivan is survived by two his sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bernice and Bob Peacock, and Cindy and Ken McComb; three nieces and their spouses, Tracey Zehl and John Swacha, Tiffany and John Whitnack, and Amber and Patrick Ashley; two great-nephews, Cody Derksen, and Connor Ashley; and a great-niece Emma Ashley. Ivan is predeceased by his parents Tillie in 2005 and Ralph in 1965 and his niece Valerie Derksen in 2012.
A Celebration of Ivan’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Sturm’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Those attending will be asked to confirm one of the following, (A) COVID vaccination (date requested), OR (B) a negative COVID test (within 72 hours), OR (C) Medical exemption AND valid government identification (with name & date of birth) OR (D) Under 12 years of age.
