Obituary of Walter Jerry Mazuryk

Walter Mazuryk of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022 at the age of 86 years.

Walter was born in Mundare, AB, on June 7, 1935. He grew up on the family farm and eventually enrolled at the University of Alberta and obtained his degree in Petroleum Engineering. He worked for 42 years in Oil and Gas and was well respected in the industry. During this time, he also pursued his passion for architecture, and helped to design many homes and remodels in the Calgary area. One of his greatest projects was the design and construction of the family cabin at Gull Lake. Walter was devoted to his wife, Joyce, and their two children, Mary-Ellen (Rod Mountain) and Matthew (Jamee Daily). He travelled the world with Joyce, and they shared many adventures throughout the United States, Europe and the Holy Land.  He was very active in his church and volunteered his time with Habitat for Humanity, building homes for those less fortunate, and in the Grandparents Program at Hillhurst Elementary School, tutoring students in math. In later life, he was a loving grandpa to Rebecca, Julia, Spencer and Sydney. He had many trips to Cancun and San Diego with the family and loved nothing more than basking in the sun with a rum and coke. He was fortunate to have one last big trip with the family on an Alaska Cruise.  “Grandpa’s Cruise” will never be forgotten. Walter will be remembered as a kind and generous man who was dedicated to God and his family and left a lasting legacy of love. He will be forever loved and forever missed.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 – 14th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Monday, January 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Mazuryk’s Mass streamed live at (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
