Obituary of Ted Stewart

July 10, 1933 – Pincher Creek, Alberta

January 19, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

With profound sadness, the family of Edward (Ted) Stewart announce his passing on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at the age of 88 years in Calgary, AB, with family at his side.

Ted was born in Pincher Creek and grew up in Blairmore, AB. Ted met his bride Jeanette (Jan) McRae in the Crowsnest Pass, they married in July 1956. Ted and Jeanette settled and raised their family in Calgary, where they called home for the remainder of their 64 years together.

Ted was a proud and dedicated firefighter with a 35-year career in the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) before retiring as a Captain. During his career he was committed to assisting his fellow firefighters as an active member and treasurer of the Calgary Firefighters Association, and trustee of the Burns Memorial Trust. He was honoured to see a grandson continue his legacy with the CFD.

Ted was an avid athlete and enjoyed a variety of sports, namely hockey, baseball, and golf. He played with and coached his Fire Department ‘brotherhood’ in the Calgary Big Six hockey league and as Oldtimers, he also played senior men’s baseball. Ted coached youth hockey and baseball, he also volunteered for many years in the Brentwood community and Northwest Little League. Ted and Jeanette regularly worked the ‘skate shack’, maintained the outdoor ice rink, and made sure all the baseball teams were always outfitted to perfection. Ted loved golf, where he continued playing with his family and buddies, until late in life, at Turner Valley and Fox Hollow. His career along with his sports endeavours afforded Ted, Jeanette, and the rest of the family many treasured and lifelong friendships.

Ted’s true legacy is the love of his family to whom he was affectionately known as Papa. There was never a major life event that Ted and Jeanette missed involving their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always showing their love and encouragement. They were avid supporters at all games, recitals, graduations, birthdays, weddings, and holiday celebrations, and Papa had a dedicated spot in every hockey arena where he watched his grandchildren. Ted always took great pleasure in sharing his immense pride for each family member and their life accomplishments, and how lucky he and Jeanette were to have a wonderful family of four children, ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Ted is survived by his three daughters and three sons-in-law, Brenda and Kelvin, Karen and Rod, and Shelley and Rod; one son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Stacey; ten grandchildren, Aaron (Ben), Brett, Lindsay (Derek), Kimberly (Neil), Stewart, Geoff (Emily), Garrett (Caitlin), Joel (Jasmine), Brenden, and Devyn; and eight great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Julianna, Kohen, Maggie, Molly, Bennett, Georgia, and Natalie, all of Calgary and Okotoks, AB. He is also survived by his brother-in-law James, sister-in-law Helen, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Ted was predeceased by his wife Jeanette, mother Lorraine, father Charles, and brother Jack.
