Condolences
Barrie was my grandad and I loved when I played golf with him. The last thing a got to do with him was play a game of chess and he won. I miss him a lot.
Jackie, Pete and I have always enjoyed being with you and Barrie. After watching the "Celebration of Life" ceremony, we can see how fortunate we were to have been included amongst his friends. The tributes were all wonderful and so heartfelt. We have no doubt that your family and friends will be a huge help in supporting you through this time. We will be thinking of you throughout this summer and eagerly await your return to SCG in the fall.
Dear Jackie, Carl, Darren, Sean and Families,
Our hearts are with you all during this time of deep sorrow. We were so sad to hear about Barrie's sudden passing.
Barrie, certainly was "larger than life" and his energy and excitement in the workplace was infectious. He surely brought
out the best in me during my 15 years in the Accounting office of his Law Firm. I can still recall his comments to me
on some of our busy occasions " You are a good lass, Kay", a lasting memory for me.
When Barrie retired, they moved to Calgary where our daughter Kelly lived at the time, we always connected on our visits.
We then enjoyed, sharing days of friendship, food and fun at their house, drinks on the patio overlooking the fabulous golfcourse.
Sometimes, while Barrie and Fred were chatting, Jackie and I would be in the kitchen making Kay's Tea Buns for her
bridge club friends, lovely memories.
Sending our sincere sympathy and love to You Jackie, your Sons and their families.
Barrie and you were blessed with 9 precious grandchildren who will now be your peace, love and joys in the years ahead.
God Bless, Take Care
Fred and Kay Simms
Our favorite memory of Barry is golfing with him and Jackie in one of the CAN/AM tournaments. Whenever he made an unbelievable shot, either good or bad, he exclaimed “Bloody Hell!” In his best British accent. After that round, whenever we saw him he made us feel like we were the best friends. We still attempt to imitate him. We will never forget him. Our hearts go out to you, Jackie, and to your family. Art & Gena Bigornia
Jackie and family, I sent condolences earlier but they have not been posted. I simply wish to let you know we are so very happy that we knew Barrie somewhat and loved his personality and sense of humor. He will be missed. We extend our sympathy to you and your family at this time.

Barry was a wonderful person, a knowledgeable family lawyer and a joy to talk with. My condolences to his family and friends.
I worked briefly with Barrie at Patterson Palmer. He was a brilliant legal mind with a sharp wit. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Jackie. I just finished watching the Celebration of Barrie's life. Thank you for making it possible for us down here in AZ to listen in.
I could not help but smile as I listened to Barrie's closest friends describe his competitive nature and his love for golf. I have a vivid memory of our time playing opposite one another in the Can Am tournament here in Grand. We played on Desert Springs and on my first Tee shot, drove the ball out of bounds in an embarrassingly bad shot. Barrie never failed to remind me of that shot when we would see one another in the years ahead. I miss those days playing the Can Am. It was great fun and seeing the picture of Pete Walton handing over the Thompson trophy to Barrie to acknowledge the Canadian victory. It was fun also to see you and Barrie standing along side the Bigornias. I am glad that you and Barrie came to enjoy your friendships with us down here. We will miss Barrie but will long remember the fun we had with you here in SCG. Jay Tressler
So hard to believe that we won’t see Barrie walking up the street to express his views on whatever Mike was working on at that time. Grumbling about how Mike was making him look bad and saying not to tell Jackie! Or coming by to complain to Mike about the football in England….again.
And I’ll miss his booming voice, big smile and bigger hugs.
A dear, kind man.
Sending love to you Jackie and all your lovely family.
Pauline and Mike
Dear Jackie and family,
I have such fond memories of Barrie and truly he was larger than life. I started my legal career and Heywood, Perry under his tutelage. Barrie was always a kind soul and wonderful mentor. My work with Barrie helped shape my career and for that I am so very grateful. My sincerest condolences on his passing. He touched many lives both with his advocacy and community involvement. He will certainly be missed and will always have a fond spot in my heart.
Peter Fitzgerald and Family.
We are sending our sympathy and condolences to you and your family .

Dear Jackie,
It was with much sadness that we read Barrie's obituary in "The Telegram." While it has been many years since we last saw you, we fondly remember the times we shared in both Labrador East and Labrador West with you and Barrie. We observed from a distance his legal practice in NL, and we noted with pride his being named a QC.
We hope your children and grandchildren will help ease your grief.
Sincerely,
Harry & Judy Coates
So so many memories of Barrie, with Edith, with Stuart. Barrie's love, kindness and generosity, with the banter, dry wit and cheek!
My heart goes out to Jackie, Carl and Kerry, Darren and Caroline, Sean and Melanie and all the grandchildren. My thoughts will be with you today, sending you all my love. Jan xx
Sean & Family : I want to offer my sincere condolences on the passing of your Dad . I didn't know him very well but we did face off one time in a courtroom ! He was counsel for the plaintiff while I was a witness for the defence . He was successful !! I am sure you have many memories of your Dad that you will always treasure . These memories will help you through this difficult time .

To Jackie and family,
We were sad to hear of Barrie’s passing. Barry was gentlemen and we always enjoyed our times at the Tennis Club. He enjoyed being competitive but it was never important - he just enjoyed the game. He will be sadly missed.
Keith & DIanne Howse
Jackie and extended family of Barrie
As can seen from the many tributes expressed by many members of the legal profession here in Newfoundland - Barrie was highly regarded.
Barrie and I had many interactions during his career - all ended well and no blood was shed !
His decision to retire and move West and spend family time was apparently a very wise move.
He had a fine family - honourable career - happy retirement and died in his sleep !
He had a good hand and he played it well indeed.
Sincere condolences to all those who mourn his passing
May his eternal rest be in peace
Godspeed Barrie
I am so sorry to learn of this loss. I had the good fortune to work for Barrie over 20 years ago. He was a superb lawyer and a wonderful teacher. I will remember him fondly, and hope the family can find comfort with each other, and in their memories.
To Jackie and Family:
Our sincere condolences on Barrie's passing. We had the pleasure of knowing him for several years during a a very difficult time. Barrie's unwavering support made all of the difference in the end. We did not have the pleasure of seeing him again after you moved to Calgary - but his larger than life personality will be forever remembered by our entire family.
Margaret, Stephanie, Chris, and Cheryl Hickman
I am so sorry to hear of Barrie’s passing. Barrie mentored me in my first job as a lawyer in 1984. He was so pleasant to work with and I learned much. I have never forgotten his kindness to me. Thinking of you Jackie and of your family. Lorna Proudfoot
Sean,
I am so sorry to hear this news. As a kid, I always remembered your Dad’s energy and zest for life at the tennis club (and his BMW, which I always thought was so cool). I am thinking of you all at this difficult time.
Ian
Jackie and Family - Barry and I crossed paths in practice very frequently. His legal knowledge and his flamboyant approach were always present, but also present was his sense of humour no matter what the issue. Always a pleasure. So sorry for your Family’s loss!!! Bob Andrews
I am saddened to learn of Barrie's passing but pleased to know that he had a happy retirement enjoying family and friends. I have many fond memories of working with Barrie on interesting litigation after he joined Patterson Palmer. His energy was infectious. I extend my condolences to his family.
Dear Jackie,Carl,Darren,Sean and families,
We were very saddened to learn of Barry’s passing. We fondly remember all the wonderful and fun dinners we shared with both of you in Florida.Without doubt,Barry’s memories will always be treasured and his life celebrated for the amazing and lovable person he was.
We wish you all strength and love,
Alf and Mary Hiscock.♥️♥️
To Barrie's family, my condolences. Barrie was always a pleasure to deal with as a lawyer. He was friendly, helpful, and courteous.
It is very nice to hear and see that after a long career he was able to enjoy retirement with his large family.
It's a shock to learn of Barrie's passing. He was a force to be reckoned with as a litigator. He worked hard and vigorously for his clients, and well-deserved his QC. Some of my very first cases had me across the aisle from Barrie. It was always an opportunity for me to learn something about being a litigator in a courtroom. And in the corridors while we were on a break, he was always congenial and pleasant, confident enough in his legal argument that he could leave it in the courtroom. I am sure that he will be greatly missed by those who knew him far better than I. My condolences to Barrie's family, and his past partners at law.

From Barrie and Jackie’s arrival in Calgary and at Country Hills Golf Club
they became instant friends. Barry was like a brother to me and we had so
many god times together in Alberta and in Arizona. We will greatly miss
him and his humor. We are here for you Jackie whenever you need anything!
My sincere condolences to Jackie and family on Barrie's passing. Seems like only yesterday I was working with him in Mount Pearl. The last time I saw you both was at the airport about 5 or 6 years ago when you were on your way to England and we were able to fit a lot into a little chat to catch up before you left. Cherish your memories... from Charlotte Slade
A very good man and lawyer who I respected and enjoyed dealing with during his years in St. John's. He made the Bar a much richer place.
Jackie and family--sorry to hear of Barrie's passing--thinking about our times in law school with the NL posse (together with 2 other islanders from PEI and New Zealand)--so long ago but just like yesterday.
Jackie and family,
Please accept my condolences on your great loss. I articled with Barrie and then worked for him for two years after I was called to the bar in 1989. He was an exceptional lawyer and a fair and encouraging boss and mentor. It is nice to read, from his obituary and from these condolences, that he enjoyed a retirement surrounded by family and friends. He was a good man and will be missed.

To Jackie and the Heywood family, I am so sorry to hear of Barrie's passing and extend my deepest condolences. Barrie was an inspirational leader who guided many young lawyers as we were getting our careers off the ground. For those who didn't know him as a member of the legal profession, Barrie was one of the finest lawyers of his generation here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Over the course of a distinguished career, Barrie was involved in many high profile cases at all levels of the Court system, including before the Supreme Court of Canada. In speaking with some of the people who worked with Barrie at our law office in Mount Pearl as we processed this sad news, we fondly recalled his infectious personality and great memories. He was indeed larger than life! I am certain that you and your extended family will cherish the fond memories of a life well lived. Rest in Peace my legal colleague and old friend.
We will greatly miss our very dear friend Barrie who wholeheartedly loved life and lived it to the fullest extent possible. We have many fond memories of good times shared with Barrie and Jackie in Calgary, in Arizona and when travelling around the world. We will surely miss his enthusiasm and fun loving nature. Our heartfelt sympathy and condolences go out to Jackie and the Heywood family.
Jackie we are so sorry to learn of Barrie's (Bossy Boots to Eunice) passing. We had so many good times and laughs at the golf course, we will miss him greatly
Dear Jackie and family, My thoughts go out to you on Barrie’s passing. I’ve got so many wonderful memories of those days at UNB and in St. John’s. A life well lived.
Jackie, I am very sorry to hear of Barrie's passing. My heart felt condolences to you and your family.
on behalf of my dad, Dr Tom Rossiter and his family, we extend our sincere condolences on Barry's passing. We remember Barry fondly ( as well as you, Jackie and your sons).
Barrie was a generous uncle and patient great uncle. He will be truly missed by all of us in the UK. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the family that Barrie leaves behind.
My deepest condolences to Jackie and the Heywood family. I worked with Barrie for 7 years at Heywood Kennedy Belbin in Mount Pearl, NL. Barrie hired me when jobs for young lawyers were scarce. He was an excellent and fair minded mentor. I have wonderful memories from that time, particularly of the staff BBQs that Barrie and Jackie hosted every summer. RIP old friend.
Jackie and family
Our sincere sympathy on Barrie's passing. It has been a while since we have seen you, but we have many memories of times spent together in Newfoundland. We are thinking of you at this sad time.

Dear Jackie and Family , David and I were so sorry to hear of Barrie’s passing ! We so treasured our times together in Mount Pearl NL so many years ago . Please except our condolences in this very difficult time .
Mrs. Heywood and family - I was so very sorry to read this today. It was only a few days ago I was talking to a colleague of my experiences working with Barrie in the last years of his practice in NL. I was a new lawyer at the time, and Barrie taught me so much in a short time. He was an exceptional advocate and a truly lovely person, funny and wise. The years I spent working with him are among the fondest memories of my career. Please accept my condolences.
Olga McWilliam Benson
Dear Mrs. Haywood and family - As a lawyer practicing in St.John’s I had many occasions to meet with Barrie both in the courts as protagonists and socially at legal events. Barrie was a strong advocate who gave little away when it came to promoting and protecting his clients’ interests. We had many vigorous debates. But,at the same time,it was always fun to debate with him and when we had finally come to a resolution of the issues we were debating, there was always good humour.
Please accept my condolences for your loss.

To Jackie and family, it is with great sadness to hear of Barrie's passing. So very true about Barrie's smile. He was a great friend, fellow Rotarian and lawyer. I have many fine memories in Barrie and Jackie's company as well as his outbursting laugh. Rest in peace Barrie and the very best to Jackie and family. God Bless.
Chris Vardy
My condolences on Barrie’s passing. I knew Barrie for many years, when he and his family lived in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and as a fellow Rotarian. He was a valued member, of the Waterford Valley Rotary Club. May his memories be a blessing.
Dear Jackie and family, I am so sorry to hear about Barrie's passing. I remember him mostly for his avid support of Carl at the Soccer field in Mt. Pearl, NL, when, with another child in the stroller, he would race up and down the side of the field urging Carl's team on. We met often when your son and my Peter and Phillip were so involved in Soccer. Grace

We first met Barrie and Jackie while vacationing in Arizona. Through many rounds of golf, dinners and get together's we got to know the amazing person Barrie was. His love for Jackie, his kids and grandkids was very prominent whenever you were around him. He was the type of man that once you met him you were his friend forever. He was always (along with Jackie) so welcoming and with a big smile on his face made you very comfortable in his presence. He will be sadly missed.
Jackie, lean on your family and friends for comfort and support when needed and they will be there for you. Love you both.
