Obituary of James Henry Cockburn

May 14, 1949 – South Porcupine, Ontario

April 25, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

 

Jim Cockburn of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022 at the age of 72 years.

 

James was born in South Porcupine, Ontario, May 14, 1949. He graduated from Central Peel Secondary School, Brampton, Ontario in 1968 with a Science and Technology Diploma. He was accepted by the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario and held a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.

 

In 1969, Jim married Esther (nee Pontes), his high school sweetheart, and were blessed with a baby boy, Shaun in 1972.

 

After graduation, Jim worked for several companies related to his Engineering degree and was promoted to Calgary in 1982.He was a member of the Canadian Society of Professional Engineers and Geologists of Alberta.

 

Jim was particularly proud of his accomplishments in sports. He was awarded the Athlete of the year 1965/1966 from Central Peel Secondary School, Brampton, Ontario. His passion in track and field was the Javelin Throw. Late in life he began javelin training and qualified to compete in the Senior Summer Olympics in Finland. During his retirement he loved to play golf and was a member at the Hamptons Golf Club, Calgary.

 

He loved to spend time with his grandson Maxwell and granddaughter Maeve and will be sadly missed.

 

Left to mourn are his wife Esther Cockburn; his son Shaun Cockburn (Nicole); grandchildren Maxwell and Maeve; brother John Cockburn (Judy); and his niece and nephew, David Cockburn (Melissa) and Jeniffer Saluja ( Inderpal); and great-nieces and great-nephew,  Olivia and Jada Cockburn, Jovan and Bella and Ronan Saluja.
