Obituary of Irene Cummins

March 8, 1922 – Calgary, Alberta

May 11, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Irene went to be with Her Lord on May 11, 2022 at the age of 100 years. She leaves behind a son Brian, three daughters, Arlene, Glo, and Joyce, and a sister, June Stephen. She will also be lovingly remembered by two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, plus nieces and nephews.

Irene Kelly was born in her parents’ home in Calgary and lived in her home city nearly all her life. She attended school at Stanley Jones, Balmoral and Crescent Heights. After high school, she attended secretarial school at Henderson’s and used these skills working at Goodyear Tire for a year or so.

She met Arn Cummins in 1941 through their mutual love of skating. Early in their relationship, as she attended young people’s meetings at his church, she accepted the Lord Jesus as her Saviour, which resulted in “great joy and a peace in (her) heart.” She married Arn Cummins in 1942 and supported his efforts to establish Arn’s Bike Shop (later Arn’s Equipment).

Irene and Arn were founding members of Bethel Baptist Church and were heavily involved in ministries there from its beginning in the late 1940s. She taught Sunday School for years and was a faithful member of the ladies’ Dorcas group at Bethel and again when they helped establish Ambassador Baptist.

The family enjoyed summer vacations at Fairmont Hot Springs for years and, like many couples of their generation, Irene and Arn later came to love holidaying in Hawaii, riding the outriggers and enjoying the warm weather during Alberta’s cold winters.

Throughout much of her life, Irene enjoyed gardening, and the family — and extended family — received the benefits of fresh veggies and corn feeds.

After 14 years living above the business on 16th avenue, another 14 years in Rosemont, plus 22 years on an acreage near Balzac, Irene and Arn moved to a condo in The Sierras. Once they got used to the downsizing, this was a good fit for them. One of the new things they enjoyed doing was playing pool. Irene loved this recreation and continued to enjoy it through to her years at Trinity Lodge.

After Arn passed away in 2008, Irene lived alone in their condo for 8 years and then moved into Trinity Lodge where, she said, she was “cared for with no more cooking!” She loved her little suite and the new friends she made here. A real highlight of living in the Lodge was attending daily chapel services.

Irene was well regarded in the family as a spirited opponent at chess, Mexican Train, Racko, word games like Scrabble, Upwords, and Boogle, and card games like Pit and Dutch Blitz. More often than not, she came away the winner even well into her 90s.

In early December 2021, Irene spent a few weeks in the hospital and by Christmas moved into Southwood Care Centre where she lived until she passed away.

She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. We wish to thank the home care nurses and very caring staff of both Trinity Lodge and Southwood Care Centre for their kindness with our Mom in her final years. A special thanks also goes out to her family physician, Dr. Wirasinghe, who went well beyond the call of duty in her compassion and medical care for Irene.
