Obituary of John McManes
May 11, 1951 – Brandon, Manitoba
May 16, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta
John Francis McManes of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022 at the age of 71 years.
John was born in Brandon, MB on May 11, 1951 and graduated from Neelin high school. He helped run his family farm in Manitoba and worked in other industries: real estate, Manitoba Hydro, the automotive industry and was also a business owner.
He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Scuttlebuck Lodge, Brandon Curling Club. He also volunteered with Brandon Minor Hockey.
The ultimate host! John loved to host any event for his family and friends, BBQ's and cooking holiday meals. John loved going every year to pick out the family Christmas tree and then barking at everyone that there weren't enough lights. Papa was always up to any task for his grandkids, whether it was being their taxi, watching their sports and other activities and bringing them meals and Timbits.
John spent many hours going for drives in the country with his wife Valorie, managing to always bring her back. He also had many fond memories of the Scuttlebuck hunting lodge with his sons and grandson, as well as his brothers-in-law and numerous friends. He got an 8 ender in curling at 17 and shot his age in golf (63)!
John loved hunting, curling, golfing, wood carving and spending time with his family and friends particularly his grandkids.
John’s most memorable vacations were the summers at Clear Lake, MB with his family and friends. He enjoyed driving the boat hours on end for all the kids.
He will be most remembered for his hugs, generosity and open-door policy, always making everyone feel welcome. His daily mission in life was to make a stranger laugh at his jokes.
Besides his loving wife Valorie, John is survived by two sons, Christopher (Lisa) and Kirk (Janna); and four grandchildren, Caiden, Ella, Kellan, and Deegan. He is also survived by his three brothers, Jim, Jeff (Val), Jaye (Bonnie); two sisters, Janice and Joanne (Rod) Dunham; Aunt Pat McManes, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
